Medicine and medical practices have evolved a great deal over the years. There is no denying the fact that during The Civil War saw enormous growth in terms of knowledge of medicine and how to effectively treat patients. It was during this time that the medical practice went from somewhat archaic to rather organized. Not only did the knowledge advance, but so did the techniques and tools used to treat people. There is a vast amount of knowledge that was gained during The Civil War that even today can be learned from. If people would truly like to know where modern medicine began, many would argue that it began during The Civil War.

When picturing what those conditions would look like, it can be assumed that there would have been very little, if any convenience. Most conveniences afforded to the public today, would not have been available to the public then. Many citizens today have no idea how difficult medical care would have been to obtain during The Civil War. After all, war was rough, gritty, and brutal by very nature. There were carnage and death. Medical care was desperately needed and the people who were injured needed effective medical treatment. This would be one reason why there was such growth in the medical field during The Civil War. This was what many consider to be the birth of modern medicine.
Civil War Medicine
When the war broke out in 1861, there was an immediate need for trained medical staff. The number of those in need far outweighed those who were able to provide medical care. To say the least, medical care was very basic and antiquated. The idea of modern medicine was simply nonexistent. There was a severe shortage of well trained and educated staff during that time. There was also no sort of special designation for a doctor at that point, and no regular accreditations. Most had a simple certificate stating that they were
