The United States of America is known today as one of the greatest countries in the world, but it did not start out that way. The history of the United States began in 1776. America made the decision to successfully break away from Britain. Shortly after gaining their newfound independence, the founding fathers created the Declaration of Independence which offered freedom of speech and equality. The 1800s created a time of discord for the people of the nation. The war on slavery resulted in a split division of the country between those who wanted slavery abolished, and those who wanted to keep it. The constant arguing resulted in the civil war. The next issue America would face was slavery. The majority of the country was in favor with keeping slaves, especially in the South. But, once Uncle Tom’s Cabin was released, it showed Northerners just how bad slavery really was. Tensions began to rise as the country was split in two between those who supported slavery, and those opposed to it. America’s first Civil War began between the Union and the Confederates. The North ultimately won which resulted in the abolition of slavery across the U.S. The 1900s brought many highs and lows in the country. Advanced technology was being produced with the automobile leading the begining of the industrial revolution. Even though the fight over slavery ended, many people still held prejudices over African Americans. The Plessy vs. Ferguson case only fueled the fire of racism by making “separate but equal” legal. Members of the NAACP worked to ban segregation which was made possible in May 17, 1954 when the Brown vs Board of education said “separate but equal” violated the 14th
