The Civil War was a war to preserve the Union, which was the United States. Since the beginning of the Constitution, there were two different views on the role of the federal government. Federalists believed that the federal government and the executive needed to maintain their power to ensure the sustainability of the union. On the other hand, anti-federalists felt that states should retain more of their independence in the new nation. In essence, they believe that every country should have the right to establish laws within its borders and should not be required to follow the mandates of the federal government unless absolutely necessary. Over time, states rights often will crash with various federal government action was taken. Arguments arose over taxation, tariffs, internal improvements, military, and of course, slavery. Northern victory in the war saved the United States as a nation and ended the institution of slavery, which divided the country since its inception.
