In the mid 1800 's, the outbreak of the American Civil War began and pushed our country to it 's maximum tension. Different decisions and actions before the war could have prevented such a controversial relationship between the states in the United States. Slavery, sectionalism, states ' rights, and secession contributed in the start and end of the Civil War. Some decisions should have been changed to stop these factors. These four factors affected the nations ability to control problems within their areas. The outbreak of the American Civil War was introduced by long term factors. Sometimes the western territories were involved. While slavery was trying to be moved into the western areas to create less tension, this did not go as planned for the different states. This sectionalism fell in the territories where there was much oppression and disagreements within the other states. For example, the south was by far the most disagreeable region throughout the country. As with slavery, sectionalism fell mostly within the south. Three historical idols led each area of direction. Daniel Webster was was incharge of the eastern territories. Henry Clay delt with the western regions of the United States, and John C. Calhoun was the man of the southern areas. These three men tried as hard as they could to keep the country at peace. Substantially this did not work out as the men wished. As the south and north continued to battle out their disagreements among their states, the tensions grew rapidly. There was so no peace or agreement at this time. Over a long time, sectionalism only made the views worse between the different states due to the constant hate felt by each
