Who really knows what caused the Civil War? Could it be westward expansion or different cultures? There are many reasons that could have collaborated together to put the nation at war. The three main causes of the war are slavery, distinction within the North and the South, and the election of Abraham Lincoln. Why would there be peace with a nation that’s divided into two that are the complete opposite of each other? One conflict that slowly rose in the U.S. within a few years was the economic distinction between the north and the south. This inevitably fueled the start of the Civil War. He also states that they all have privileges as and liberty provided to them including: no children were put to hard labor; women did little work and were protected from despotism of their husbands. This Supreme Court case put the North and South on edge waiting on a verdict. Dred Scott was a former slave whose slave’s owner moved to a free state where slavery is prohibited. When they returned to Missouri Scott sued for his freedom that he had by living in a free territory. The discussion take place during the trial was basically that a Negro slave descendants free or not were not apart of the people. Africans were inferior and had no right of a white man. They also challenged the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution by stating that the situation is not warranted by the constitution. This resulted in the void of the case ruling in Sanford’s favor. This upset northern including: former slaves, political figures in the north, and slaves in the south. People angered by the situation wrote articles such as Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Stowe. The south also had uprising like the Nat Turner Rebellion when a group of rebels killed 55 to 65 whites.(Document
