The south has always said that the war was fought over taxes(specifically tariffs), and everyone believes that we say this to rationalize what happened and make excuses about it not being about slavery. This is untrue by examining the economies of the north and the south you find that the north was dependent upon the south being as productive as possible, and to control how wealthy the north became they passed high tariffs on southern goods forcing the south to sell everything to the north making the north wealthy at the expense of the south. Lincoln becoming president was soon met with North Carolina seceding from the union. This action led to many southern states following North Carolina’s example. (Meltzer, Milton p.25) They called themselves the Confederate states of America. They made their own government and constitution modeled after the U.S.’s constitution. They even elected a President in this time Jefferson Davis. Sounds like a country that is rather proficient does it. I told you that in order to discuss this that faithful day when the war started April 9, 1861 South Carolina confederates bombard Fort Sumter an unprovoked attack. This is also incorrect the union provoked the attack by refusing to negotiate which is what Jefferson Davis and the Confederate congress tried to do, however the newly elected president Lincoln refused to negotiate because that would be recognizing the confederates as their own nation. This attack led to many others across the confederate
