Civil War Book Report

For my visualization project I chose to make a comic about the three primary sources: 12.1: “A North Carolina Law Prohibits Teaching of Slaves to Read or Write”, 14.4: :Margaret Junkin Preston Describes Southern Suffering in her Diary”, and 15.1: “William Howard Day, an African American Minister, Salutes the Nation and a Monument to Abraham Lincoln”. Source 12.2 is about a law that stated that slaves could not be taught how to read or write. Source 14.4 is about Margaret Preston, a slave, who wrote in her diary about how she was treated and what her days consisted of. Source 15.1 is a speech by William Howard Day who praises the Nation and Lincoln for freeing slaves. Each page relates to a different source. For example, the first page is source 12.1 so it is about the law that prohibited slaves to read or write and the consequences of that law. The first page of the comic is about how slaves were mistreated and how this mistreatment lead to the start of the Civil War. On page one, the first box shows a white politician announcing the new law in North Carolina and white supporters cheering the politician on. The second box is of slaves showing their sadness to their white owner and wondering why they can’t gain an education while white people can. The third box is of two slaves, who broke the law, being whipped by their owner because they were teaching each other how to read and
