Tittle The United States was founded on the promise of equality and freedom. Over the years many have fought to make that promise a law that applied to every American citizen. A social movement that has promoted a more an equalized society is the women’s civil rights movement. This social movement promoted improvements and completely transformed the way society works. Through this movement women gained independence and freedom. In past decades women were less active members of society. There was no focus on women earning higher education. The freedom that women now posses in their twenties is confusing, they get mixed signals from the modern society and from old traditions passed down by the older generation. Women are given more freedom than ever before, but are still constrained by gender expectations regarding their sexuality and desire. The social landscape of America has changed tremendously over the past couple of years. More minorities and women have achieved higher level education. Women can now achieve the same roles than men use to have with a college degree. They have reached success but are now stuck and confused with how their …show more content…
They are working sided by side, collaborating and facing the same challenges. Except that women are still learning how to cope and how to live in this new society. They use a strategy of desire to help them cope. Bell believes that one of the strategies is when women separate their sexual desires from the personal identity, “These women benefited from the increased sexual freedom that characterized their childhood, adolescence and twenties, and they succeeded in developing comfort with their sexual desires…however their feared losing their identities and independence through begin in an intimate relationship”(Bell 30). By pursuing only sort term relationships and remaining emotionally unattached they protect themselves and they believe that they are not as vulnerable. By remaining distant from their partner they are also protecting their personal identity. They keep their carrier goals their personal stories to themselves whereas in a serious intimate relationship they would have to be open to their partners. Bell refers to women who utilize this strategy as the “sexual women”, they are comfortable expressing their desires and are focused on their careers but avoid long term serious relationships. Women employ this tactic because they have a difficult time merging together the traditions of their family and the way the world works in the contemporary
