Civil Engineering Informative Speech

Decent Essays
I honestly never would have thought that someone would ever chose civil engineering as a topic for a informative speech, in this Comm class. Civil Engineering was a very interesting topic to become more informed in due to everything that is involved with this topic, involving ourselves. Finding out how Civil Engineering ties in with every day life, from trees, buildings, rooms, and floors. I had no idea before how much it took to become a Civil Engineer, as well as all the math involved with this major, and the morality behind it.
As a class we all became informed on the four areas behind civil engineering, first structural, geo structural, water resources, and transportation. The structural part of civil engineering would be the planning

For that reason I have never wanted to major or work in anything that involves me doing math for a living. I released that Daniel has taken mostly math classes for his major, in just his first year. In Daniels speech he not only got me thinking about his topic he also got me feeling as if I would have fun doing what he wants to be doing in the future, but after hearing the whole math part, that brought me back to earth. I don’t see this as a problem in Daniels speech I see this as a strength.
With this speech I feel it got all of us thinking about how civil engineering works, what classes are involved, how civil engineering ties in with the rest of everyday life, as well as the morality with it. He took us out and made me think about doing this great thing he was speaking about, and I feel that, that’s something a great speaker does with a great topic.
According to Douglas M. Fraleigh and Joseph S. Tuman in chapter nine of SPEAK page 273, “A signpost is a word or phrase within a sentence that help your audience understand your speech’s structure.” In this speech I heard mainly one signpost, towards the end of the speech, indicating that the speech was almost over. One improvement I would suggest would be to use more signposts, to help the audience follow along with the topic on hand. This would be especially helpful for people who have no prier history or knowledge of the

This speech did exactly what it was meant to do, it informed us as a class the major of civil engineering as well as how this has to do with our every day lives. This topic really caught attention because of its relation to all of us. Also by informing us how much it takes to become a civil engineer, the morality behind it as well as all the very difficult classes that come along. Civil engineering as a topic may have seemed as a risk when I first started to hear the speech but it came out to be a very interesting and informative speech. The speech may have had at most two thing that may needed some help or clarification, but besides that I felt this speech was very strong and informative. What I felt connected to the most was in the beginning when the mention of Legos was given because I knew that this was something I would do as a child as well. This was a very good hook that got most of us thinking about the topic, as well as our child

The topic of the discussion/ lecture was about gentrification in Pilsen, a lower West Side community area on the West Side of Chicago. In the discussion I learned that gentrification is the process of renovating a district or community so that it conforms to middle class state. It was commented how property values have increased, rents have increased, and the number of low income Latino families has decreased. Pilsen is losing Hispanics, particularly Hispanic families because rents are so high. People, specifically caucasion, are buying properties in the Pilsen area and remodeling them.…

Chris’s use of rhetoric to perfectly captivate his audience highly influenced me. Before starting to take the idea of self-driving car into reality, all he and his coworkers had was plan in their heads and thoughts to accomplish it. This thought ensured that it didn’t take too long for them to build the prototype version of the self-driving cars. So, this inspires me to think that nothing in this world is impossible. I know that, there are numerous mysteries for us to discover, and to discover them, all of us have to dig in deep.…

The two topics that resonated with me were Micro-aggression and the privilege statements. The statements made me realize that we take certain things that are so “normal” for granted. Simple privileges that I take for granted do not have to worry about where my next meal is coming from and that I press the handicapped button to open the door because it’s convenient. Like most of us college students that live on campus we have a meal plan but what about if you live off campus or simply aren’t in school at all? I never think about the individuals that aren’t in the same predicament as me.…

Through the progression of this course, various aspects of history were viewed, in addition to concepts that are still associated to the lives of Aboriginal peoples today. While carrying some previous, biased knowledge on the topics discussed, First Nations Studies allowed the development of many ideas as well as the differing perspectives on each. Via the use of assorted reading selections, tutorial discussions, guest speakers, lectures, and a variety of other forms, I was able to take away a unique understanding, different to the one I had prior, which in turn educated me on Indigenous communities. This course attempted to bypass the anger that has been accumulated over the years, and portray information in order to avoid further issues…

A good speech can leave a positive impact on the listener. This is true for many great speeches such as the Gettysburg Address, President Reagan's Challenger Speech, and John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address. All three of these speeches come at a time of despair in America. Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address during the Civil War. Reagan gave his State of the Union Address the same day the U.S. Space Shuttle, the Challenger, exploded.…
