Imagine being in a situation in which a person has to go against what they believe in all to serve an individual of greater power. That burden of having to prevail time and time again through adversity is evident even in present day. While incarcerated Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his experiences on pieces of tissue, then later published the memoir that was known as the “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” After reading the play Antigone, then deciphering the theme civil duty vs injustice it’s safe to assume that Martin Luther King Jr more than likely would have agreed with Antigone 's views against her uncle, King Creon; considering how the duo similarly went face to face with an infamous adversary. This path is one that would have been avoided by all means had King been the one to make the decision. The four steps of nonviolent protest is the guideline Antigone should have used to combat the crimes against moral law. In spite of not being aware of Kings steps she still manages to follow them to some degree.With that being said it is clear that King 's ideas correspond with Antigone 's motives in terms of their faith in moral values, remarkable courage to resist oppressors and uncanny ability to remain unfazed by lack of support.
Although King and Antigone have separate motives for their actions; they still share commonalities in their unbreakable faith in serving a higher power. In Antigone, Antigone comes to the conclusion that she will not stand idly by as her society disrespects her deceased brother. Sophocles emphasizes Antigone 's self-righteousness in attempting to honor the dead and follow the law of humanity rather than man. King witnessed the laws that men have created in order to keep minorities oppressed. King later states how segregation “gives the segregator a false sense of superiority and the segregated a false sense of inferiority” (King 4).
