The article “The Return of Civil Disobedience” illustrates that the year of 1968 was one of major hardship. First with the assassination of Martin Luther King and the subsequent race riots and secondly, the tragic assassination of President Kennedy. Although it was a trying time for our society we were able to overcome that grim time. The author explains how President Trump has made several decisions to change America while a large portion of society believes that we are headed towards a downward spiral. It is their belief that this current scenario will end up painting a similar picture of how people felt in 1968.
The peoples’ reaction to difficult times or controversial issues is to express their discontent through movements and protest.

No matter who is in power 100% of society will not agree with every decision that is made. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean that those controversies shouldn’t be heard or expressed. I believe that President Trump has voiced the reality that needs to be heard and previous president’s may have chosen to ignore. A main objective for President Trump is to eliminate illegal immigration in America. Previous President’s may have avoided this topic due to political retribution. Trump has chosen to speak the truth he believes. How much of our tax dollars go towards illegal immigration matters; educating the children of illegal immigrants, providing emergency healthcare, losing jobs to workers that will be paid lower wages consequently affecting the ages of Americans. I believe that President Trump can change things for the better and that he has the best interest of our country in mind. Donald Trump is a Businessman, not a Politician and this is one of the reasons I agree with the way he governs. In a country where we have faced a huge financial crisis we need someone a president with business savvy and a realistic approach to finances and negotiations with other countries. His businesses have clearly succeeded and if he is looking at the America as such that may enable the country to move in a positive direction. Previous presidents have chosen the easy way out or the politically motivated avenue but President Trump is looking at all possibilities even the ones’ society may not approve of but could be the solution to many of our

It has now been one year during Trump’s time in presidency, and it would seem as though that his administration has yet to hit any of the big milestones that promised during their campaign. While they did gain some small victories in the past, it does not seem as though they would it big as of now. Even so, they still face nonstop backlash towards their approach to our government’s lawmaking and policymaking ideals. And yet, they will still continue to move forward, and stay on the same agenda, to which is the path of a businessman whom seeks out for a wealthy and stronger America. In fact, this is quite similar to what our previous president, known as Richard Reagan, had in mind as well.…

Why does Trump feel the need to deport millions of immigrants out of America? Well, Trump believes the crime and violence in America and the bad U.S. economy correlate with immigration. Nevertheless, in 2010 an analysis of the Census data, displayed only 1.6 percent of the male immigrants that were incarcerated, and 3.3 percent of them were native-born males. Regardless of the data, Trump is still willing to remove the immigrants from America, which will harm the U.S. economy. In addition to Trump 's views on immigration, the American Immigration Council…

Trump believes that illegal immigration is destroying U.S. taxpayers, and he believes that neither Republicans nor Democrats are helping the situation. Republicans don’t do anything about illegal immigration because some of their business supporters want cheap labor. Democrats look at illegal immigrants as potential Democratic voters (135-136). Both Democrats and Republicans may have their reasons for illegal immigrants to stay, but Donald Trump thinks that the parties need to put America’s interests first and that illegal immigrants need to return from whence they came. Trump then continues to discuss that illegal immigrants are by definition, lawbreakers, and refers to them as “illegal aliens” due to the fact that illegal immigrants are often members or violent gangs.…

Throughout history, wars, injustice, and other violent acts have established themselves in our past. Issues concerning land ownership, segregation, government injustice, gender discrimination and economic inequities have plagued our societies for centuries. In some countries, despite the government and its leaders, violence is used to gain control and power. When studying historical events, we can examine how individuals, governments and political groups have taken different approaches to injustice. Introduced by Henry Thoreau in 1849, civil disobedience is defined currently as “the refusal to obey governmental demands or commands as a collective nonviolent protest in hopes for a change in politics, economics, or social structure in any given…

In the article "Civil Disobedience" by Henry David Thoreau, the author argues "that government is best when it does not govern at all..government is best but an expedient; but most governments are usually, and all governments are sometimes, inexpedient" (n.pag). Therefore, from this passage readers are able to decide that Thoreau believes that governments are always Practical to have. and sometimes not practical. Additionally, Thoreau continues with "I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government" (n.pag). As seen, the author is not calling for no government at all which in my opinion could be misinterpreted from the first quoted passage, but Thoreau is calling for the opposite and simply a better government than he had…

Beginning at the innocent years of childhood, when the world is seen as an imaginative wonderland, children are showered in lies. Fictional characters, such as Santa Claus, the Easter bunny, and the tooth fairy, are used by parental figures to reinforce naivety. Sure, little white lies like Santa Claus seem minute: however, the lying does not halt there. Many schools’ textbooks exploit students to the altered truth behind America’s patriotic past. Fabricated stories about the bombing of Hiroshima, the genocide of Native Americans, slavery, and the civil rights movement are used to perpetuate justification for America’s past actions.…

Civil disobedience has been a part of this country since its inception. From the acts which led up to the American Revolution (like the boycotting of British products) to this day, the very fabric of the United States is stitched together with the threads of challenging abuses of power. What is often misunderstood about civil disobedience is that it is not a display of disrespect. It does not mean that those protesting are not patriots. Rather civil disobedience is an act of fighting to protect the values of the United States when one feels as though they are in jeopardy.…

According to the United State's Constitution, within the first amendment, it states that as a citizen of the United States, one may peacefully assemble and petition the government. The United States was founded by the idea that as inhabitants of a country, one should be given certain rights that can not be revoked by the leader of the country, nor the government. Due to the King of Great Britain's tyranny over America, the people of America have felt a certain pressure pressing down upon them, restricting their freedoms. The Boston Tea Act, was one of their protests towards the unfair taxes that were inflicted upon them. Civil disobedience is continuous throughout history.…

Rise up The acts of civil disobedience has helped changed the law regarding “minorities”. The practice of civil disobedience has helped improve laws to make them fair to all, this is due to it being started by “the people” who feel that the current laws in place, put in by the government or those in power are wrong, misconstructed as well as out of line, and must be changed. John Locke believed that the law was a reflection of the people, and that the government must insure life, liberty and property to all persons. Throughout history the law did not change the people but the people the law, due to the law itself being a reflection of the morals and values held by the people at that time, through The Famous 5, who for the right of women to be…

Throughout history there have been different causes and unjust laws that have ignited the need for civil disobedience. I am an Afro-Latina living in the United States, and growing up I have been aware of both the struggles that Hispanics and Black-Americans face living in America. I feel most connected to the civil rights of these minority groups because I myself am one of them. That is why I fully believe in the act of civil disobedience for equality, not only for Hispanics and Black-Americans, but for all minorities in America who have been subject to discrimination or an injustice because of their gender, ethnicity or religious affiliation. I’d like to start with the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement.…

Robert O’Connor Concord High School New Hampshire Like many things in life, civil disobedience, is all a matter of perspective. Whether it be the Great Muhammad Ali peacefully opposing his selection for the draft or Rosa Parks literally sitting down instead of standing up for what is right on a bus ride home, each and every case of civil disobedience has its ups and downs. Though, when talking about basic human rights, there is no room to be neutral, and that is why peaceful resistance to laws most certainly impacts a society positively. From an optimistic perspective, everything will be alright in the end. Despite Ali’s…

We have succumb to a path of elite rule and are slowly falling under the control of the government believing that they make the rules and we play the game. During Shays’ Rebellion, Thomas Jefferson wrote to James Madison in a private letter, “I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical.” Though he wrote while Daniel Shays led an armed insurrection of 4,000 veterans in Massachusetts, I believe Jefferson, when he wrote of “a little rebellion”, referred not to large-scale violent events such as Shays’ Rebellion and the American Revolution, but instead to periodic instances of civil disobedience, such as the Stamp Act boycott or the Boston Tea Party in the era before the Revolution. Jefferson recognized the necessity of civil disobedience to preserve the vitality of the young democracy his generation had toiled to…
