Policy and Civic Engagement Coordinator
When considering jobs I would be interesting in applying for, I needed to take a few things into consideration. I know I will be attending post-graduate school next year so the thought of applying to jobs at this point in my life seems far away. I am not completely sure the path my graduate studies may lead me in the future, however I do know I want to be involved in some capacity with fighting social injustice. If I were applying for a position today, I would apply to: Young People For: Policy and Civic Engagement Coordinator. This position is with the organization, the People for the American Way Foundation. In order to understand why I would pick this job, it is important to know what this foundation

It is often important to look back on history to see where America may be going in the future. I support and promote social justice for all people and see myself advocating for those who feel they have been mistreated. Because of my strong Christian beliefs, I want to see all people treated fairly and equally no matter what their status in life may be and feel the future of America lies in the hands of the young people. It is important for young people to be politically motivated and active. This job would fit in with my beliefs by helping train young people for the present and future political environment in America and in turn making sure those who feel voiceless can be …show more content…
While I have not continuously had this experience, I have over a number of years while in high school and college been in a position to do advocacy work with a variety of underrepresented groups. As mentioned before, I have worked with underserved populations such as burn victims and those with mental illness to advocate for justice and equality for them. I have excellent communication skills especially the ability to communicate to diverse audiences. When I believe in a cause I am able to convey my feeling and beliefs with much conviction through emails, public speaking and in person. I have recently had the opportunity to hone my skills by being a member of the Trevecca University debate club. I feel I excel in social media and am able to use all of the most popular applications, such as Facebook and Twitter in order to effectively communicate. I am fluent in English and can speak and understand some Spanish as well as American Sign Language. Flexibility is key to this position and I am able to change my schedule as needed in order to fit the needs of the organization. Getting campaigns out to people who may not be reached in conventional ways is key to success so therefore having to travel and work additional hours is not a

I am passionate about empowering and serving disenfranchised communities through education and public policy. For this reason, I would welcome the opportunity to work for a non-profit organization like Rosie’s Place that actively fights to bring social justice through both the personal lives of women as well as through the social structures that perpetuate their marginalization.…

Riverview Gardens in Appleton, WI was an interesting place to volunteer for my Civic Engagement experience. I started volunteering at Riverview Gardens last winter after writing about the site for my UW Fox Valley course in Urban Geography. We had learned about “gentrification,” in Urban Geography, which is the process of neighborhood upscaling that results in displacing residents who can no longer afford to live there. Riverview Gardens is an example of gentrification in reverse. Riverview Gardens was once Riverview Country Club, a private 72-acre golf course, which came up for sale in December 2011.…

Brian’s lecture was really interesting, and got me thinking about the kinds of social justice that I am passionate about. I am really not one for participating in rallies or anything like that, so I figured I was not right for social justice, but after reading in On Being a Therapist I realized social justice can be really varied. He talks about how he has a foundation for helping girls in Nepal to stay in school, because many families who cannot afford school for all of their children sometimes sell their daughters to brothels (Kottler, 2010). I am passionate about women’s rights and it would be incredible to be able to be involved in some kind of social justice that works to advocate for women not just in America but all over the world. But again, this is where cultural competency and understanding addressing frameworks comes into play: equality and empowerment does not look the same to me as it does to women in India, Japan, or…

Civic engagement in college courses is gaining popularity among liberal arts colleges across the nation. With college courses’ reconstruction to take a civic-based approach to education, one must determine the content educators need to deliver and what will be permitted to be taught, first and foremost, for education to be successful in the production of effective and virtuous citizens. The content to which we instruct our students is at the center of many debates about implementing a civic-based approach to education. David L. Palmer argues that having a lesson plan to instruct students by “employing civic participation in college instruction enriches the practices of both education and democracy” .…

As a future Human Rights attorney, it would be an honor to contribute my skills to an organization that understand the importance of protecting intersectional identities and ensuring humanity is safeguarded. As the Howard University National Association for the Advancement of Colored People President, I campaigned and advocated for voting rights and political literacy particularly for students and underprivileged communities in the surrounding area. This was done through voter registration drives, workshops, community gatherings etc. I also focused on women’s rights as it relates to bringing awareness to sexual assault on college campus through programs such as Take Back The Night which encouraged students to take a pledge to never be bystanders when sexual…
