Civic Engagement Speech

Child abuse and neglect is the topic for my Civic Engagement speech. In this speech I will persuade students to donate to the Kempe Foundation for The Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect. I will be using three of the following concepts: Availability Heuristic, Authority, and Friendship or Liking.
Availability Heuristic is a mental short cut the human brain makes when evaluating things such as concepts or decisions. Humans estimate the likelihood of events based on the information available in their memory. If memories quickly come to mind, the person may assume that the event is more common. If there are no available memories, the person may assume it is less common. I will incorporate Availability Heuristic in my speech by asking the audience to write down estimations to a variety of questions. I will ask them to estimate how often they think child abuse or neglect takes place in the US, how many children on average die per day, and how many cases of abuse and neglect are reported each year. After hearing a few estimations, I will answer those questions. This will make my speech more influential by making

For example: Titles (PhD) People will listen to a person with a PhD more than they will listen to one without because a PhD means that person is highly educated. We as students listen to our professors because they have authority over us. A way in which I will use Authority is to speak of my experience/expertise in child abuse. I was abused till the age of 14 by my mother. I managed to find a way out unlike Gabriel, a 5 year old boy I took care of. In 2009 Gabriel’s life was taken from him as a result of child abuse. These anecdotes are very personal and emotional stories that will appeal to the audience’s emotions keeping them engaged in the speech. They also give myself as a speaker credibility making the speech more influential or

If the Newseum is torn down, the first amendment will not have a place to be celebrated just for itself, so there will be no place to celebrate the first American Constitutional freedom. President Trump is pressuring Congress into passing a bill that will start a project to make room for new monuments. The project will consist of tearing down monuments that the government feels are unnecessary. The project will ruin DC and the American spirit. If the bill does pass, the Newseum should definitely not be torn down since it is a reminder of what America is, it will have horrible economic effects on the country, and tearing it down will diminish the American spirit.…

A common way to entice the audience’s attention is by asking rhetorical question. Rhetorical question is a question asked to create a dramatic vibe or to make a point whereas to get an answer. For example, speakers can say “ why is google is so innovative? , “ Why bill gates has the highest net worth in the world?” and others. Additionally, on presentation speakers need to make a starling assertion by saying “Don’t you know that every year, people with visual impairment is caused by playing computer”.…

I would like to thank you for the opportunity to reflect on the reason we celebrate Independence Day. This day is one of America’s holidays that is celebrated every year in the United States as a Federal holiday. I would like to give you a little history about the Fourth of July; This day was told to be the day that America commemorated the birth of the United States of America as an Independent nation. July 4, 1776, was not the day Continental Congress decided to declare it’s independence, it was July 2, 1776.…

Mrs. Abbott walked home from town with the newspaper tucked under her arm. She had just had to pay an extra tax to purchase it. A new tax that the British had put on several items, including newspapers, legal documents and even playing cards had been causing a commotion in the town. This was a problem that had just occurred and made everyone in the colonies furious. It wasn’t even the extra money that she had to pay that bothered her, it was the fact that England had not gotten approval from the colonial legislatures to levy the tax.…

This may cause them to use an availability heuristic causing them to think of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that took place in December of 2012. A person’s availability heuristic would cause them to think of this occurrence because an availability heuristic is a mental shortcut that depends on examples that come to that person’s mind when analyzing a specific topic, concept, or method. Sandy Hook would be considered a staple reason the debate on gun control has come into light more so in the past five years than it has in…

    The Child Welfare System

Introduction: The child welfare system is a corrupt system. Many suspected cases of neglect (GRTEP defines this as “parents should have done something for the child but failed to do so,” such as denying medical care or not feeding them) or abuse (GRTEP defines this as “Abuse means that you did something to hurt your child,” such as molesting them or hitting them hard enough to break bones) are going unreported or uninvestigated, children are living in miserable conditions (even after DCS intervention or when in foster care), and are not given a smooth transition into adulthood. Perhaps a more family centered approach to ending child abuse and neglect would benefit our country the most. Discussion: With many children living in neglect and abuse…

While convincing the State of Texas Education about the problem with neglect and abuse, I will also talk about 3 possibilities there are for addressing/solving this problem. Audience questions: Neglect and abuse is something that increases every day in life.…
