On Spirit of Service Day, I was associated with Student Senate and we volunteered at the FoodBank for the Heartland. It was a morning section, we left for the place around 8:30am and came back at noon. Our group was in charge of making food bags for children in need. Some students, due to the income of their family cannot afford meals. Usually, through having the family monthly income, the government determined which students to aid feed through public schools. During the weekdays, the selected students are given free breakfast and lunch. Unfortunately, during the weekends, they are left hungry. The FoodBank for the Heartland provide meals bags for them. Consequently, we packed different food items in bags and boxes. They are then shipped …show more content…
In this paper, the author states that service learning different from volunteering is its explicit academic component: like any test, paper, or research project, the service learning experience must be integral to the syllabus and advance of the student’s knowledge of the course content. I find it interesting that both paper highlights that in order for volunteering to become a learning experience, it must be tested over / reflected. This information does make me think of service in college differently by making sure I reflect on my volunteering experiences in order to make a learning experience. The second information I learned from this is concerning civic engagement. Before reading this paper, when I think of the term civic learning, it was always associated with politic or government based. It usually relates traveling to the town mayor’s office and bringing up a concern. I was unaware that most colleges associate it with service learning. To me service learning is associated with volunteering and reflection about the service. My view of college service has been slightly altered because of this information, because I now understand that college service learning is not the same as civic engagement. Civic engagement is a broader topic and umbrella, and could be associated with service learning and volunteering if

The first service learning experience I had was Into the Streets, a campus wide event that has all students and faculty volunteering around the community. During this affair the women’s soccer team was assigned to work at the Gospel Mission Thrift Store, where we hung and sorted clothes and later placed them on racks. On first arrival the racks for clothes were empty, after our four hour shift the clothes were smooshed together so tightly there was no room…

Before attending high school, my elementary school teachers would talk about civic engagement, and their descriptions lead me to believe that participating in community service would be boring and burdensome. I remember my teachers saying things like,” In high school you’re going to have to do community service in order to graduate. Such as volunteer at an elderly home, or an animal shelter.” Prior to actually completing a service project, I only had an unappealing image of community service in mind. However, once I got to high school, I grew to love community service as well as learn the importance of…

    2. Civic Engagement refers to the active participation in “individual and collective activities associated with civic life, such as voting, being a political activist, joining community groups, and volunteering. While old aged people are viewed as if their “time” in society is over, many advocates of civic engagement believe that old adults such as baby boomers who have acquired a vast amount of knowledge are very useful to society. I slightly disagree with part of the meaning of civic engagement. While volunteering is considered part of civic engagement, I believe that it is important to note that there are different forms of volunteering.…

An academic experience that I have completed that has helped me make progress toward my goals is the Honors 110 speech and communication class. When I first started college, I was very uncomfortable speaking in front of others and I stumbled upon my words when I talked to people with authority. From that course, I learned that I was good at memorization and the synthesis of different knowledge and ideas. In our persuasive speech, we were to have actions that college students could do to bring change about topic. From that experience, it showed me the importance of civic engagement in bring about change and spurring others to action and knowledge creation in trying to solve problems.…

In order to raise money for prom this year, I accompanied the class of 2019, for 5.5 hours, to a west point game and worked in concessions. I had a great experience working with my peers to achieve a goal that would benefit the senior class. Recently I have engaged in service with my church, for 4 hours, helping to move furniture while they were switching locations. From this experience I learned that sacrificing my time for a communal effort may seem minuscule, but ultimately helps increase efficiency. Also I volunteered at the annual Easter egg hunt at memorial park last weekend for 3.5 hours.…

Throughout history, every region and its citizens have gone through periods of immense pride. Often this strong nationalism is felt after winning a war, the inauguration of a new leader or anniversaries. As national pride among citizens within a country rises, civic engagement is also amplified. The same theory can be applied reversely to assume that low levels of nationalism correlate with scant civic engagement. Using the most similar system design one can explore the reasons behind why two analogous nations have very different levels of nationalism and civic engagement.…

I found it very fascinating that the instructors promote their time to set up a weekly meeting with their students, going through their reflections of their weekly teaching in these community avenues. The way I was thinking of Service Learning method is having my students volunteer in community teaching about nutrition and applying what they learned in my course and writing a report about it, In fact, after reading this article I realized that the most important objective of requiring students to participate in SL is to promote Self-Efficacy which is a key component of enhancing students’ ability to be a better health educators in community. Also, what stood out for me after reading this article is the instructors’ approach of providing a safe…

My initial thought on the black ant incident, is that I do not believe I would have thought to handle it in the manner that Mary Cowhey did. Over the course of the day, if I see an ant crawling around my bedroom or kitchen surfaces, my most immediate reaction is always just to squash it. In this way, I would react to this situation in a similar manner to how most of the students in the classroom do. Killing an ant just seems to be an acceptable behavior in society to me. Much like how Cowhey’s student Ben states: “but we always kill ants...we can kill ants if we want to” (Cowhey 2) To treat ants and other insects in this manner, is the social norm for most people.…

Sure, colleges gives their students the “intellectual tools for life beyond campus”, but the question is how will they contribute to society? “What of graduating seniors already knew full how to balance jobs, studies, family, and volunteer work in the surrounding community?” says Eggers; he implies that colleges doesn’t provide all the aspects to prepare you for adulthood, but to resolve that problem is to volunteer for services. With the exposure to service you get to meet new people, develop new skills, and gain more education. Voluntary works shape the character and benefits the person by giving them the ability to learn new things almost everyday. “ It would focus volunteers’ work on tree social objectives: reducing the dropout rate..” says Levine, from the article, The Case for “Service”.…
