The prospect of another day at the office was always uninspiring and things were no different on that Monday morning... Ho hum! Just another predictable week coming up for me, Henry Irvine, a Public Servant with the Australian Government. At least, that's what I thought as I boarded my city-bound bus. Sometimes fate moves in mysterious ways. Certain events were about to take place that would change my life and it would never be the same. After about 15 minutes on the bus just day dreaming while stopped at a bus stop, my attention was drawn to a poster on the side of the bus shelter. Wow! This poster certainly caught my attention. The slender, long-legged model looked most appealing, as she stood in a very seductive pose in high heels and …show more content…
Puzzled by what I was seeing. This girl in the glasses and long skirt was a total contradiction to the girl on the poster. Yet, strangely the two seemed to have a real affinity. Or was it just my imagination? I could still see Lisa through the glass petition and found it hard to keep my eyes from wandering back to her and also keep my mind on my work. The possibility of Lisa leading a double life seemed to intrigue and excite me. My mind wandering off in flights of fantasy. Thinking about what Lisa might do in her spare time, away from the office - at nights and on weekends. This thought process continued as the day progressed. I would fight my way back, to focusing on my work, only to have the demanding poster girl / Lisa relationship steal back into my thoughts. I flipped open the embossed lid of my gold fob watch and saw that the hour was approaching four-thirty. For just a moment I let my mind linger on the cryptic inscription on the inner lid "So you'll always be on time -

Name wanted nothing more but for time to hurry up. His eyes, the dreadful colour of jealousy and greed, darted between the clock and the vacant seat across his table. He was sure that the clock enjoyed how agonisingly slow this wait was. It ticked by at a sluggish pace, in a weird mechanic sort of laughter that no one but Name could understand. Everyone else said that it was impossible for clocks to feel emotion, let alone laugh.…

The advertisement presented by Hartmann in the 2015 5th edition Times Magazine, shows us there is clear evidence of stereotypical gender issues. The advertisement shows a petite, blonde woman in a long dress carrying a luggage walking past a man who is attempting to hold her back from moving and talk to her. The advertisement then goes to state in capital letters “Weightless Beauty” which may refer to the luggage suitcase. Upon further inspection, this advertisement may be portraying woman as weightless beauty because she seems to be picked up by the man hence weightless and beauty as in the woman. The advertisement is unclear if the text is meant towards the suitcase or woman.…

Following Through or Recursion? Although the upsurge of visually androgynous models in western advertisements suggests a healthy transition in the appreciation of gender and sexuality, I believe that it is instead representative of how these cultures has not yet implemented basic gender equity. Fundamental to gender equity is the distinction between sex and gender, wherein sex describes the physical characteristics assigned at birth to individuals (Male, Female, Intersex) and gender describes the cultural definitions given to these physical characteristics (Masculine, Feminine, Trans). As such, gender is a social construct that prescribes the basic roles individuals assume in the structure of society.…

The October issue of Interview Magazine is being the source of much talk after seeing the light. Not for nothing, it features a fashion editorial which could be defined at least as disturbing. Its name, “Pretty Wasted”, can give you a clue of what you are going to find in its pages. However, the editorial goes too far. In fact, it goes further than you could ever imagine: models are posing as if they were drunk and unconscious, lying on the floor, surrounded by any kind of trash and waste, and dressed by big brands like Marc Jacobs, Prada, Versace, Diane Von Furstenberg, Yves Saint Laurent, Armani Privé or Tommy Hilfiger.…

In Susan Bordo’s essay, “Beauty (Re)Discovers the Male Body,” she discusses the appearance of men in advertisements while simultaneously juxtaposing them to female advertisements. Through the piece, she includes many sample advertisements to develop her point. The photos are placed next to the corresponding sections which help make her argument clearer. She also relates her point to John Berger, as she tries to demystify these advertisements in a similar way he tried to do so about artwork in his essay titled “Ways of Seeing.” Berger demystifies art by suggesting the use of image boards to restore meaning to the paintings, while Bordo works to demystify advertisements by trying to discuss why these male advertisements had started.…

Reconciliation Interrupted by the faint sounds of birds chirping and grass swaying in the gentle breeze, the calming silence became a distant memory. As the birds flapped their wings, moving at the edge of the tiny meadow, from one tree to the next, they cast their shadows over the body of a small brown skinned, black haired girl. She lay on her back in the hilltop grass, facing directly up towards the almost blinding light of the afternoon sun. Her dark skin, holding a lively warm glow, reflected the rays of sunlight off of her quickly flickering eyelids. Suddenly, they were open, revealing her dark brown almond shaped eyes and her ever so slightly off white sclera.…
