City of Green Benches
Ageism is a concept that is harshly used towards the elderly. The meaning of ageism, means to discriminate towards ones age. In the book, “City of Green benches” by Maria Vesperi, she relates to the idea of ageism towards the elderly in a specific city. She chose to do research in a specific city by connecting the city to the elderly population. Vesperi focuses on many parts in her book such as aging, identity, social supports, and more. Within this essay, the focus will be towards one part, which is why she chose to do her research in this specific city. In this portion of the book, Vesperi looks into what she noticed when she arrived in this city, the history of the city, what the meaning of her book indicates, and the

Petersburg has to have a reason in what capture the eyes and attracts those who live here, and the elderly who go here for their retirees. “Many people in old age choose their living arrangements based on where their friends or family are and how easily they will be able to facilitate their social interactions” (Paul W. Foos & M. Cherrie Clark, 2008, p. 318). This shows that the elderly wants to surround him or herself with being able to have a social life. When Vesperi had first arrived in this city she noticed nothing amusing about this city and it looked like, “Any other semi-urbanized, commercial area” (Vesperi, 1985, p. 33). This gave her another reason to look more into why this city really is the most known retiree place. There were some old people around but as mentioned not as what was there before which was a populated city with retirees. It was best to now look at why this place really attracted the people from the past and now what’s left in the …show more content…
Petersburg is known as the city of green benches, as what Vesperi named the title of her book. In the early 1900s there were thousands of green benches placed in this city for the comfort of the people living here. Benches are a place where people sit and are able to socialize. Benches also can have any color but in this city they were green, which distinguished it from any other bench. The people living in this city from since the early 1900s have now grown up talking about the present times, in which a drastic change happened. It was mentioned that the population of young retirees weren’t being replaced and this resulted in an age discrimination situation. St. Petersburg demographics data came to show that many younger people didn’t want to visit downtown because they believed their was nothing to do and that there was too many old people around. It was such, in 1961; there was the removal or repainting of these green benches from the city. These benches were put there since the early 1900s and from the time those people living there to now the 1960s made it part of their life, and now it has been taking away from them. The reasons of removing these benches were because they wanted to attract other age groups besides the elderly. This is where Vesperi didn’t quite understand on why would the city build the benches for the people there at the time and then remove it later on to just attract the same age of people that were once here when they first had

On the transect, I have noted the different features of the street. It shows that many businesses are located on this street, which is quite a contrast to the derelict pubs/hotels and terraces that can also be found on the same street. It is made clear, that in the process of urban renewal, there are still many building left untouched, which are yet to be gentrified and made modern. There are many derelict and even modernised pubs on the street, which is reflective of the street’s history. It shows that the industrial working population of the past, spent recreational time at these pubs, hence the reason for the large number of them scattered throughout the…

Breaking Stalin’s Nose by Eugene Yelchin is about a six year old boy living in communal housing with his father in Moscow, Russia during the 1900’s. As he slept under the table, Sasha awoke immediately at the sound of guards running up the stairs. While he watched his dad get taken away by the guards, he sat there helplessly. He got kicked out of his apartment by his neighbor and worked his way over to his aunt Larisa’s apartment. As soon as the streetcar dropped him off at his prison-like school, he got straight to work, unwilling to get in trouble.…

One integral component of any type of literature, especially in poetry, is the setting. A setting may include the time of day or the literal location where the story takes place to give the reader insight into an argument. However, setting is more than a mere overview of the situation; it also includes the ways in which characters interact with the audience. Serving as the foundation of how an argument is approached in the poem, setting can influence a reader’s interpretation. Thus by choosing a specific or abstract setting, the poet can impact how their voice is perceived by the audience or by other characters.…

I chose this quote because I think it would be very weird to adapt to another culture like she had unfortunately she didn't do so well. I also think that the different civilizations should learn about one another because if they do want to visit or even if they were accidentally left there like Linda was they would know how to adapt to the customs of the other civilization. I also picked this quote because it relates to they way we live to because we don't always agree with other countries just like other countries don't always agree with us.(100) This quote talks about how Lenina sees a old man for the first time because where she lives people don't get old and wrinkly or lose there teeth, because they have high technology.…

In the article “Telling ‘Spatial Stories’: Urban Space and Bourgeois Identity in Early Nineteenth-Century Paris” (Journal of Modern History, 2003), Victoria E. Thompson explores how the ideologies of the middle class, expressed through literature, had a significant impact on the organization of society, and the physicality of landscape in Paris surrounding the July Revolution of 1830. During this time, social class and landscape were under construction, and as a result, the formation of the new large middle class was in need of an identity and took advantage of their presence and power of the urban landscape to help differentiate themselves among the wealthy and poor. Spatial stories, fictional narrative accounts of the everyday occurrences between the social classes in specific urban locations, influenced the middle class through the…

Russia in 1929 was in as much a state of flux as possible, whether it be economically, politically, technologically, religiously or culturally. No one really knew what the end result would be, though they had theories, and this is exactly what Vertov conveys in his film. Industry was stressed extensively in Russia during this period. Through the use of new machinery they could farm more efficiently and produce in greater numbers and these processes are highlighted in Vertov's…

It might not affect the younger generation right now but if not taken control of right now it will affect us if we get to an older age.…

“The highest strata of society not only resided in the Ring area but, with surprising frequency, owned the buildings in which they lived. For the Ringstrasse apartments [they] were prized as among the most secure and lucrative private investments…the high aristocrat, the merchant, the widow of fixed income, or the doctor who could afford it, were all drawn to buying an apartment…in the Ringstrasse house, social desirability and profitability thus reinforced each other.” (Schorske 54) Schorske asserts that with the construction of the Ringstrasse community it created class mobility which subsequently showed a clear reflection on one of the major social tensions between the aristocrats and bourgeoisie. With the growth and expansion of the middle-class, status has become…
