The world I've learned to know is the life in City Heights, though this is not the world I came from. The world I came from compared to the world I have now is a tremendous change. As people think about City Heights, they think about the good things, whether it's the beaches, the diversity, or the beautiful weather. Although if you think about the world my family was raised in, Southern Sudan, the only thing that comes to mind is the war that has been continuing for decades, the death of innocent people, and the hunger and thirst seen throughout the country.

It causes sadness in our hearts every time we hear the stories of what they go through like not being able to pay for clothing in the harsh weather, the unsanitary water they have to drink and bathe in daily, and going through hunger for days because they aren’t able to pay for a meal for their family. As a humble and sympathetic person, I wanted to find some way to help, but I was just a “kid”. That’s when my school offered an internship in mental health at the Sharp Grossmont Hospital. Not only was this great because I aspired to be a Mental Health Therapist, but in addition to the hands on training, it was also a paid internship. This was my chance to make a difference in my family’s life and I wasn’t giving up on this chance. After fighting for a spot in this internship, I finally received it and took advantage of it to the best of my ability. I continuously went to my internship despite the extremely hot weather in the spring and the pouring cold weather in the fall. Months later, the hard work payed off and I received my first ever pay check and was able to have it sent to my
