City Address Reflection Paper

On October 5th, I attended the State of the City Address with seven of my fellow classmates. The event was so exciting to attend and hear about Mayor Cranley’s agenda for the future of Cincinnati in the upcoming year. Also, I was curious about if and how he would discuss Issue 22. While waiting for the address to begin, there was a woman handing out a sheet of paper that had the ballot language of Issue 22 printed on it and she was handing it out to members of the audience. I found this very interesting considering that I assumed that many of the people in attendance are obviously engaged in Cincinnati politics and are thus aware of Issue 22 and Mayor Cranley’s role. By attracting and retaining talent in the city and increasing property values it will lead to the beautification and improvement of Cincinnati Neighborhoods which in turn reduces child poverty rates. The State of the City Address was a great night to learn about what Mayor Cranley has planned for the future of Cincinnati and getting to spend time with my fellow classmates.
On October 12th, Gil, Jared, and I attended the The Cincinnati Parks Levy Debate featuring Brewster Rhoads (FOR 22) and Don Mooney (Against 22) There were pros and cons of having Brewster being the FOR 22 representative. He was good because he was in support of the levy but is not a supporter of cranley. He was bad because he kept assigning homework to the audience telling them to “check things out” and ended many of his responses with “it just makes sense.” Brewster overall did good but had two slips ups. First, he said the levy isn’t perfect which just fueled the fire of the opposition. However, Brewster argued that he would like to see in the ballot language more about the community input the levy would involved if passed. Also, I would have argued that no piece of legislation is perfect when it first proposed. The whole goal of legislation is to get is passed and work on it to
