The monarchy, like any other monarchy, held most of the power in Great Britain. So naturally the King and the parliament decided what the people in Britain and in the colonies could and could not do. He indirectly governed the colonies through colonial governors who were appointed usually by himself (Thomas 9). Many riots and rebellions broke out in the colonies because the citizens in colonial America did not approve of the King’s decisions (especially on taxes). One of the most famous protests is the Boston Tea Party of 1773, where the Sons of Liberty destroyed merchandise (tea) in order to make a statement against the Tea Act of 1773 (Thomas, 43). They grew tired of the underrepresentation they had as citizens, so they decided to become independent from Great Britain. I see the colonists during this era as mere residents of a state because they did not have many rights and power to participate in the politics of their residence.
The Continental Congress was formed in 1774 by the 13 colonies in order to stop the British from imposing taxes and other acts on them. This congress was responsible for drafting 5 delegates to write the Declaration of Independence. The activists involved were fighting for their rights and their people’s rights. They did not wanted to stop the discrimination and segregation. The African American community was not only being represented African Americans, but there were also white Americans who were fighting for the cause along with Martin Luther King. This representation became political participation which helped with abolishing segregation. After the civil rights movement, inclusiveness of the black community was gained through desegregation. White children and black children could interact with each other and other children as well. This helped African Americans gain more respect and voice in the United States.
