Citizen Kane Scene Analysis
The scene we’re analyzing starts off with a shot of the New York Daily Inquirer. It’s a close shot, taking up the entire screen. I feel this close up is to show the viewer that the newspaper company is going to be the primary focal point for Kane, and his two partners at this point in the film. After the close up, the camera pans down to show Kane and Leland sitting in a car looking up at the building. Kane says “Take a good look at it Jedidiah, it’s going to look a lot different one of these days.” Despite the look on Kane’s face being one of optimism and promise, this statement gives leeway to all of the bad things to follow. Kane even goes as far to tell Mr. Carter to have one of his reporters pose as a detective to bully Mr. Silverstone into either providing the location of his wife, or admitting to his guilt. The scene ends showing a fuming and defeated Mr. Carter leaving the office after his attempts at protest weren’t even heard by Kane, who just simply talked over him the entire time.
The next shot shows Mr. Carter exiting the inquirer angrily, as he is met by a paperboy from the Chronicle, advertising the story that he and Kane just had a conversation about. The boy says that the missing woman might be murder related and Mr. Carter gives a look of disgust. His feelings are that his once respectable paper will be printing stories similar to this from here on out. The scene shows an extreme long shot of the inquirer, and it appears tiny and desolate, against the surrounding cityscape and empty streets. I feel like this provides two things: it shows the Inquirer’s current status in the community (as it becomes a much more popular paper later in the film) and Mr. Carter’s feelings towards the company now. As in the previous shot, the inquirer was “larger than life” when Kane was looking up at it during its close shot, but it is now miniscule and dark when Mr. Carter is in the same location.
