Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin covering the tip of the penis typically done in the newborn stage, circumcision after the newborn stage is still possible but is a more complex procedure. I think most people who do or don’t get their sons circumcised are uneducated about the topic. Some people believe circumcision after birth is mutilation of the child's body and should not be done until they are old enough to make the choice themselves; circumcision at after the newborn stage is possible, but comes with more complications and pain the person can remember. Circumcision prevents phimosis (inability to retract the foreskin when if should be able to retract) paraphimosis (painful inability to put foreskin back where it should be) and balanoposthitis (inflammation of glans and foreskin). But it also increases the chance of meatitis (inflammation of the opening of the penis).
Is circumcision necessary? That depends on your beliefs on the topic, uncircumcised penises can be harder to kept clean, in young boys who we already can barely get to shower and are super active, to get them to really keep their penis clean is going to be difficult.
