Effects of Circumcision
Infant circumcision has been considered to be a form of perinatal trauma. Studies have shown that even though infants differ in their tolerance to pain, circumcision has potential to cause psychological deleterious. Experiencing trauma at such a young age has proven to cause severe disturbance to the normal functioning of the infant. Boys who have undergone the procedure often experience post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from this trauma usually after a number of weeks or immediately after birth.
Circumcision alters the brain due to this perinatal trauma because studies have shown that circumcised infants are more sensitive to pain later on in their lives and this becomes a psychological problem and it ultimately makes the infant inclined to stress disorders, hyperactivity.
Similarly circumcision is also associated with mood disorders because painful procedures performed in the first few weeks after birth are associated with certain changes in the brain that bring about these mood disorders. (Victoria et
