Before I had read the article and watching the movie we saw in class, I was not aware of female circumcision (female genital mutilation, FGM). Women would endure female circumcision in Somalia for the preservation of virginity. Women in Somalia believe that it is normal and is currently used as a form of self-restraint. The consequences of these practices are excessive bleeding, pain when the wounds heal, and difficulty in urinating. The United Nation has acknowledged this issue as a violation of human rights and has open programs to stop these violations. However, female genital mutilation is still practiced today. In order to change these customs, men and religious leaders must act against FGM. Female circumcision is not even practiced or advised in the Quran, so through their participation it will end.
