Circle Training And The Kool-Aid Effect

Overall, I enjoyed the Circle Training - on both a practical level in regards to facilitating trainings and on a more personal level. I both appreciate and have some challenging thoughts regarding the basics of circle practices: the talking piece and the circle. I can wholeheartedly appreciate both and believe that they can help to facilitate more substantial conversations, peace making, etc. However, I also wonder how much of the belief that talking pieces and circles are essential is more of a drinking the Kool-Aid effect. Generally, I believe both are great and should be used, but I am not sure about them being completely 100% necessary at all times. For example, in the driftwood activity - before I fully understood the importance of the talking piece or circle - the talking piece went around numerous times before we could finally agree on something. …show more content…
And even if the talking piece does go around again until everyone passes, there is still a chance that someone will not say something for fear of being the person to make circle start all over again with passing. Just as before, once the therapist leaves the circle for a second, the two patients start swinging the buddy band like jump rope again, but this time the motion is not as large as before. When the therapist returns, a returning group member pulls up a chair, joins the circle, and holds onto the band. They are moving side to side with the buddy band, group synchrony. While the people sitting closer to the therapist are able to sync up and go side to side the same way, the patients sitting across from the therapist mirror her side to side movement instead of going in the same direction as the rest of the…

In this chapter Myles Horton explains all of the characteristics that defined Highlander. One of the ideas that characterized these workshops was that students brought with them issues that affected them and society in general. Many of these students were looking for an answer to these problems, answers that teachers in Highlander could not respond, because it was the principal goal of the school to teach students that they could find these answers by themselves. All these workshops Horton called them “circle of learners”, where all students sat in a circle and the teacher was responsible of creating a “relaxed atmosphere” where the students were free to share their experiences and arrive at a solution. 2.…

I want to take the knowledge I gained and share it with parents, students, and/or staff as appropriate. The important thing to take away from workshops is information to share with others. For the athletes to learn the hitting skill correctly, it is important to look at the sessions practice design. Motor learning occurs through practice or experience (Hoffman, 2018c). As the hit has both a start and finish, it will be viewed as a discrete skill. Massed vs Distributed Practice Massed practice is where activities in each session are performed closely together. A utopian society is one in which is modeled on or aims for a state in which everything is perfect or ideal. In a Brave New World, the author Aldous Huxley looks to satirize the ideals of a perfect society and provide a frightening view of what the future may hold. As a result of new technological advances in reproduction and conditioning give way, the impact on society overall is preposterous. The whole reproduction process had been modified so that viviparity is no longer necessary, as children are mass produced in factories. I do not evaluate a good lesson based on how deep or how brilliant it is, but I do base the value of a lesson on if it is easy to remember and whether it will stick with you or not. Almost every single person will be in the position of attending a meeting at some point in their life, and this book outlines how to present yourself as a confident and knowledgeable person when put in that position. One of the first rules that was discussed was that no matter how important manners are to you as an individual, sometimes they are not always the best to use when it comes to a meeting. No one in a meeting setting will stop their flow of ideas to hear yours, so you must jump into the conversation when there is a pause to speak clearly and passionately about what you believe. Also, do not miss the opportunity to let others know what you have accomplished in previous years to show your importance to the discussion.…
