Among her contributions to art included that she broke several gender barriers in the publication world, while working to produce smarter magazines for the young American women. Pineles became one of the most highly acclaimed magazine art directors and graphic designers in the country. A few headlines are posted around the cover model’s face, but the text is subtle and non-distracting; all the pieces work cohesively to create a very sophisticated look. The picture is a girl holding a phone in one hand and a pencil in the other, she looks very professional with a white collared shirt, bright red lipstick and bright red nails. The caption on the cover is “Fashions and Beauty for…. Nurses, Teachers, Office Workers, Saleswomen and Executives”. I choose this piece of hers because it encourages women to go to work and to become more independent. This was a new idea that women were coming across in the 1950’s when this magazine was released. I liked that the caption included every type of profession and that this magazine would provide them with fashions and beauty for working at these places. I think by including this it may have put a more positive light the subject of women working. By showing the women that were working or women that potentially wanted to go to work that they could still look put together not just as a stay at home wife but also if they were going to work probably excited a lot of women. Also by having a magazine just created for women who work, it may encourage them that they are not alone and that the Charm magazine can help give make up and wardrobe tips to be more fashion forward as a new working woman at their work place.
