Cinna's Archetype

Some people struggle with showing they care about someone. They may try to be kind and supportive but it can come off the wrong way, or it can be ignored altogether. In The Hunger Games, Cinna can first be seen as an outcast in the Capitol because he is a free thinker and doesn’t fit into the confinements of what is expected in the Capitol, but what is more important to notice is that he is a loyal retainer and mentor archetype for Katniss as he quietly roots for her in her journey to fight in the Hunger Games.

Cinna’s part as a role model in The Hunger Games is not so quickly identified and it is not quite as developed as his role as the outcast in the Capitol’s society. Simon and Cinna’s both can be seen as the loyal retainer archetype. However, Cinna is more indirect with how he helps Katniss on her journey as the hero. One of the best examples of how Cinna helps Katniss is when she is about to do her interview before the games and he tells her “Pretend like you are talking to me” (The Hunger Games). It is a simple act but it helps Katniss overcome her nervousness in the interview. He has his own way of showing that he cares and that he is rooting for her. Additionally, Simon also quietly roots for the hero, Ralph and Piggy, in Lord of the Flies. Simon shows his archetype loyal retainer when Piggy’s glasses are taken away by Jack and he stands up for Piggy and tries to help him get his glasses back (Lord of the Flies). Grendel’s mother shows a similar character archetype; however, she does not root for the hero in Beowulf. She does though encourage and cheer on her son Grendel in his story. The way she supports Grendel is very different from how other mothers would cheer on their sons. She is a very cold person and shows her affection in other ways, for example: how she saves Grendel when the humans are

This gives Katniss the ability to lead effectively, as those following her look up to her in part because of her strength. An effective leader will protect those they love and those who follow and believe in them. This is clearly demonstrated in Katniss’ first Hunger games.
