The main body of Cinesite’s work were powerful sequences where both the alien and allied ships engage in airborne battles inflicting devastating damage all around, everything from the ships to the weaponry and Area 51 environment were all completed by Cinesite.
Multiple CG elements were involved in creating shots which in many cases were entirely computer generated, including alien fighters, weapons, CG crowds …show more content…
Cinesite conceived the look for this ship, building the asset and adding it into many shots during the epic battle sequence.
The main challenge was the illusion of scale, Cinesite designed an intricate series of geometric reticulations and arabesques all over the carapace of the ship based on reference material of the City Destroyers in the first movie. This really gave the ship a convincing feel of enormity.
After initial approval of the Cinesite concept model, the reticulating plate patterns and other key areas of the ship were further refined in shot by shot necessity such as the cannons, center door, and anything that played super hero in frame. Many areas of the ship are seen in very close proximity, which became challenging both geometrically and texture wise. In the end the low res of the model was 4 million polygons with near 700 4K UV patches of layered displacement from the modeling and texturing combining techniques for the final detailed look.
These major sequences were an impressive collaboration between multiple facilities, with Cinesite contributing many of the most dramatic
