Cinematic Techniques In Tim Burton Films

Tim Burton films are very unique and one of a kind. He describes and creates a fantasy that only he can control. His films are very mysterious, and eerie. To make those effects possible he uses cinematic techniques. The techniques that are prominent in his films are the use of sinister and content music, low and high key lighting and lastly the use of flashbacks. He uses this to make his films very interesting and entertaining. This essay will talk about the many cinematic techniques that Tim Burton uses to make his films one of a kind and very mysterious.

This is used to also change the mood and tone of the scene because if the scene is very dark and eerie than the scene is most likely to be very terrifying. Tim Burton uses this cinematic technique in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because when Tim Burton changes from the happy factory into the dark and dilapidated town of where Charlie lives. By changing the lighting, it also changes of the audience’s thought about the living conditions of Willy Wonka and the state of where Charlie lives. Another example of the changing lighting is in the movie Edward Scissorhands. Tim Burton first showed that ecstatic and bright town. But when the salesperson looked through the mirror on the car the lighting change from very bright and happy to very dark and mournful. That changed the mood of the scene because the town looked very happy but, Edward lives in a very dilapidated and terrifying mansion. The last movie that involves the use of high and low key lightning is the happy little town of Spectre. Tim Burton used different lighting to show the progress of how the town of Spectre changes over the many years when Edward Bloom came back. When finding the town for the first time the light was very bright and everyone was upbeat when living in that town. Being more relatable can cause the viewer to more interested in the films and will want to be the successful person that the main character is. First of all, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory uses flashbacks to remember the early life of Willy Wonka and how wanted to eat candy but, could because his dentist/father did not want his teeth to rot and have the cavities that come with eating too much sweets. Tim Burton used this to show that all of the young children of today like to have candy and sweets but, when eating too much you could have horrible cavities. Another film by Tim Burton that we watch was called Edward Scissorhands. This whole movie was a flashback about how Kim fell in love with Edward. This can relate to people because even though Edward has scissors on his hands, he still has good traits and personalities. Someone may not fall in love with you at first, but when they see who you truly are, than they will fall in love with you. That last move that we watched was the Big Fish. This movie was about the different stories that were told from the dad. While the different flashback depicts that true story that happened. But his son did not think that the story were true until his dad’s death. These flashbacks of the dad show the most important times in the dad’s life and the many friends he made over the many years.
