The tale of Cinderella is a curious one. It was an Italian folk tale first written by Giambattista Basile in his Pentamerone (1934). The Cinderella story by Charles Perrault was set in late 17th Century France. During this Century, France was ruled by King Lois XIII and Queen Anne, then by their son King Louis XIV. The French courts at this time were famous for their opulent lifestyle and lavish balls. In the story of Cinderella, the prince held two balls in quick successions. In order to fit the social standards of the time Cinderella had to have a lavish gown, glass slippers, horses and a carriage. Another way the myth discusses the French history at the time is by its title. The name Cinderella is derived from the time cinders (Dundes, 1988, p. 12).
