Reproduction. The underlying goal for every single organism on earth. All creatures, large and small, have their own way of producing offspring. Many bacteria and plants produce asexually, which means they do not require a sexual partner in order to reproduce. For many other creatures such as reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and many other creatures, A sexual partner is required. Each type of organism has there own way to attract mates. Birds like turkeys fane out their tails to impress potential mates. Fireflies glow up. All of these mating displays are visual, but for creatures like the frog's, auditorial cues are relied upon. In the case of the Barking tree frogs of Florida’s Apalachicola national forest, Scientists have used …show more content…
The reason distance is so important is because the longer the female has to travel towards the male, the more at risk she is to being confronted by predators They came up with 3 hypothesis. The first hypothesis was that the frogs simply judged the loudness of the croak to determine how close potential mates were. The second hypothesis was that the females listened to degradation of sound to determine how far potential mates were. The third hypothesis is that female frogs relied on a sound gradient to judge distance. Although scientists have had their theories, testing them was the tricky part In the first test, two speakers were placed at different distances from a female frog. Each one played the sounds of barking male frogs, but at different volumes in each trial. It was expected that the frogs would go between the speakers in each trial at random, but 17 out of 20 trials had the frog go to the nearest speaker. This proved hypothesis 3 because it showed that female frogs listen for how long sound takes to reach its position. This also showed that tree frogs greater cognitive abilities than previously thought because they used sound

The first chapter in the sixth extinction is geared towards focusing on the rapid extinction of frogs, a species that has survived over 400 million years. Elizabeth Kolbert, the author believes that we are entering a sixth extinction and that it is crucial to pay close attention to it because any slight change can drastically influence an entire ecosystem and its inhabitants. The epicenter of the extinction seemed to begin in a small town in Central Panama called El Valle de Anton. The Panamanian golden frog was one of Panama’s most iconic attractions. The frog is small, toxic, and has black speckles.…

An unknown sample #18 was obtained on November 6, 2017. The sample came in a glass test tube with a cotton swab that contain the unknown sample. To find the identity of the unknown sample, we had to conduct several biochemical tests to eliminate and narrow down possible organisms that fit the biochemical description to accurately identify our unknown organism of interest. These biochemical tests provided insight on the physical color retention of our unknown sample, and through’s the unknown organism’s ability to break down tested compounds to determine if it had the corresponding enzyme that would allow it to do so. The testing of unknown organisms to accurately discover its identity is crucial in the field of health science.…

In many cases Lyrebird calls even fool the real species that the call originated from. Sound is exceedingly important when it comes to courtship and males of many species use sound to show dominance, alert their presence and to attract a mate. Just as important as sound in most cases is apperance. As seen in Barn Swallows, Gelada Monkeys and peacocks, females seek out males that have the best array of color or darkest feathers in this case, in hope to pass those strong genes to that of their offspring. The Lyrebirds courtship display is just a snippet to what males will do to attract a mate.…

Around the world, every living animal has its own life history and own ecology. Barking Treefrogs are unique and friendly amphibians usually found in Florida and surrounding states. Although they are one of the largest frogs found in the United States, the number of Barking Treefrogs in the United States are starting to reduce due to habitat loss. All amphibians have distinct traits that assemble each one of them as an individual; Barking Treefrogs are exclusive in every trait they own by having an individual mating, eating, and living style. All different species of animals either decreases or increases in population over time.…

In juvenile crayfish males are not dominant over females which leads scientists to conclude that some type of hormones is the cause of male dominance in sexually mature crayfish. When crayfish were blinded their aggressive behavior was not restricted, which may be explained by evolution in nocturnal forms. Crayfish that had their antennae clipped and were blinded showed significant changes in behavior. In order for dominance in crayfish to be formed both visual and tactile senses are required. Despite the experiments producing reliable results, on an ecological scale the experiments are not valid.…

Mating beginning with male signaling the female by croaking to indicate that he is close to a water source and is available to mate (Jeffrey,2007, pg 257). The male cane toad would release his sperm in the water and the sperm would swim to where the female has laid her eggs in the water (Jeffrey,2007, pg 257). This may be advantage because it allows the cane toad not to have a penis, however the male cane toad still need to be close by to female in order to fertilize the eggs (Jeffrey,2007, pg 257). The only disadvantage of external fertilization is that the female has to use a lot of energy in order to produce eggs and many eggs may not survive (Jeffrey,2007, pg 257). However this type of cane toad have toxic eggs which would reduce egg predation (Jeffrey,2007, pg…

There will be various of test to choose from in order to identify the unknown organism, which will eliminate numerous possibilities and narrow it down to one. All the fundamental skills that we have learned and practiced in the lab will be used to perform on our unknown such as aseptic technique, microscopic examination, the use of differential media, and determining if it’s positive or negative. Performing aseptic techniques is the most crucial step that requires the utilizing of transferring, inoculating, and storing bacterial cultures and media. Aseptic technique is defined as procedures that prevent contamination…

Commonly, sexual selection changes with the seasons and level of development of an organism. “Seasonal changes in pheromone-detection ability and olfaction sensitivity over the reproductive cycle have been observed in mammals, birds, and teleost, but such seasonal shifts in the visual system are less well-developed” It has been hypothesized that three-spine sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, are more sensitive to red during the summer than the winter, which could be linked to the desire to perceive the red breeding color of males. One of three-spined stickleback male’s prominent sexual characteristics is their breeding color, which are blue eyes and a red belly. Many previous studies have been performed to show that their red belly is a…
