Symbolism In The Cinderella Story

The story of Cinderella was written by The Brothers Grimm in 1812. However, these two brothers did not actually write the original story of Cinderella, rather they wrote an adaptation of the German fairy tale. Their goal was to record all the popular fairy tales in order keep the old German tradition alive and make the people have pride in their country. They interviewed family members and various people in order to get the full stories. The stories were initially aimed at German families, particularly the children, which is why it is less violent than the original tales that woman would tell when they were in the kitchen.

Since the time of its conception, Cinderella has had numerous adaptations, including Disney’s tamer version of the tale that contains animals turning into people and a fairy godmother that has no other purpose to the story other than getting Cinderella ready for the ball. There are even two live action movies in a more modern setting. A Cinderella Story stars Hilary Duff and she is a high school student with a meticulously cruel step-family and a job as a janitor/dishwasher in her mother’s diner. Since the bird was a symbol of the Greek goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite, it represents love and monogamy, which is where the connection of eternal love comes into play.
