“No,” I heard my mother cry.
“Mother,” I called as I bolted down the stairs two at a time, “Mother are you alright” I reached the foyer to see my mother fall on her knees, her face covered in tears. I looked up to see soldiers and I knew what it meant. I heard the soldiers offering their condolences to my mother. I helped her to her feet, thanked the soldiers and sent them on their way. Mother collapsed in a nearby chair and said through the tears,
“Oh lord how will I tell Cinderella her father is dead”.
When mother told her she took it really hard, for months Cinderella only worked on the farm and did chores. I felt bad, but my sister Elinor was taking full advantage of her grieving. When our mother was out she made Cinderella do her chores

“Hush Elinor,” mother snapped.
“As I was saying” she continued “we need money and we need it now,” she pulled out an elegant looking envelope.
“This is an invitation to the royal ball and there the prince will choose his bride, one of you must win the prince's heart and then we will be rich!” She said with so much hope I almost believed it was a possibility. “M-may I go to the ball,” Said a small voice behind me. I turned my head and saw Cinderella in the doorway with a sponge still in her hand. “Well, of course, dear,” said mother “we would love for you to accompany us.” “Ha-ha, I hope you don't expect to win the prince's heart” laughed Elinor, “no prince would ever fall for a filthy maid like you”. “Elinor” mother said looking at her daughter shocked at what she had just

“I don't care if it's true or not, you need to watch what you say,” Mother said, she turned to apologize to Cinderella, but she was already gone. It was the day of the ball and the house was in chaos. Dresses and feather boas were being tossed all over the room. Elinor was screaming that she couldn't find her dress and we were all running back and forth trying to get ready. Finally, our dresses were laced, our hair was done and we were ready to go to the ball, they out of the shadows came a girl I could barely recognize. It was Cinderella clean and dressed in fine silk, we all stood stunned looking at the girl that was usually covered in dirt.
“It was my mothers,” she said as she twirled around. I was stunned. I looked back at my mother and sister to see their reactions to this shocking sight. My mother's face was a look of joy, but when I looked at my sister Elinor and her face frightened me like nothing ever has. It was hate, the look on her face was pure and total
