Cigarettes are considered a normal part of society. Cigarettes are seen every day at gas stations, convenience stores, and even grocery stores. Most know of someone who smokes whether in the family, or friend group. Cigarettes cause many problems, most of which society already knows about. People know these cigarettes cause major problems to their health and to the health of others around. Even though the producing and selling of cigarettes is a huge source of income for the government, it should be made illegal because of the health risks, environmental risks, and the amount of money consumers spend on cigarettes.

Consumers spend money on cigarettes that could be used for more useful things. This money can be used to better oneself, instead of spending on something that could kill. “Annual smoking-attributable economic costs in the United States estimated for the years 2009–2012 were more than $289 billion” (Economic facts about U.S. tobacco production and use). Consumers not only spend money on the actual cigarettes themselves, but also all the health problems that come along with the use of cigarettes. Most people find themselves spending more and more on their smoking addiction, and although some try to quit, it’s usually unsuccessful. “Nicotine is an addictive drug, which when inhaled in cigarette smoke reaches the brain faster than drugs that enter the body intravenously. Smokers not only become physically addicted to nicotine; they also link smoking with many social activities, making smoking a difficult habit to break” (General Smoking Facts).
Taking all of this into consideration, the pros of making cigarettes illegal definitely outweigh the cons. Cigarettes are something one sees every day, and doesn’t think twice about. However, not only is the person who’s smoking doing damage to themselves, but also to the people and environment around.
