Pregnant women that smoke are jeopardizing their child’s health, as well as their own. Using the CDS’ s terms, “smoking can lead to a preterm delivery and cause the baby to have a low birth weight” (8). Babies are considered victims, and they trust their mothers to nurture them while being in the womb, not kill them by choosing to smoke. The banning of cigarettes, would provide children with the potential to make it past birth, and obtain a healthy life. Not only does cigarettes affect a person’s health, it affects the health of everyone that is around, while the smoking is in action. According to NHLBI, “secondhand smoke is the smoke that is breathed out by a person who is smoking” (15). It is just cruel that bystanders are just as affected as those who smoked, and this is one important reason why cigarettes should be gone. Based upon, The American Cancer Society, “children are affected the worst by secondhand smoke because they are least able to avoid the smoke” (8). The thought of a poor child being affected by someone as their mother or father making a horrible decision is terrible, and more people out here should take better action to protect the younger ones more. A few health effects that children incur from cigarettes are bronchitis, pneumonia, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Children would be less vulnerable to problems pertaining their health. Also, teenagers would have a higher chance of not becoming another statistic in society, and people will no longer have to worry about contracting something bad from being out in public, around smokers. Although, some people will not be too fond of the idea of banning cigarettes, they would soon begin to start feeling healthier and happier after a couple weeks of being off the sickening drug. Getting rid of cigarettes would lessen people’s chance of getting cancer, heart attacks, and strokes. One cannot deny that it takes away the freedom of choice and causes many of Americans to lose their job.
