Cigarette Smoking Should Be Illegal The use of cigarettes has been legal for centuries, but yet it is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Tobacco is the primary component in cigarette smoke. It contains thousands of chemicals that can harm specific organs in the human body. Secondhand smoke consists of the same chemicals and can be dangerous if inhaled by a nonsmoker. The death toll produced by cigarette smoking related deaths is massive, yet nothing is being done to prevent the expiry of the common U.S citizen. Tobacco is the main ingredient in cigarette smoke. (Graves 6) “According to the American Lung Association, there are over 4,000 chemicals in tobacco, 63 of which are known carcinogens”. (Friedman 16) Carcinogens are cancer-causing agents and are life threatening if found in the human body. Compounds such as tar and the gas carbon monoxide (CO2) are produced when tobacco burns. When a smoker inhales tobacco smoke, it passes around the teeth, over the tongue, around the mouth, and down the throat. (Graves 7) Substances from the smoke can flow into the bloodstream, damage the function of your heart, and harm your blood cells. This damage increases the risk for atherosclerosis, a disease in which a waxy substance called plaque builds up in your arteries.
