INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Cigarette smoking is one of the growing concerns in public health worldwide, and in fact, it is considered one of the most preventable causes of death. On a global scale, the use and sale of substances such as alcohol and tobacco among youths is causing substantial levels of health-related problems and deaths. According to data released by the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 4 million deaths which are attributed to cigarette smoking and tobacco usage occur yearly and this estimated figure is anticipated to rise further to over 10 million deaths annually by the year 2020. In fact, in developing societies like Nigeria it is now a growing public health challenge. In 2010, the WHO estimates that about 47% of men and 12% of women smoked cigarettes worldwide. In addition, the general population survey on the use of tobacco products among adults in Nigeria (20 years+) which was carried out in the North-Central region of Nigeria revealed the following: that 22.6 % was the prevalence rate of cigarette smoking; 17.9% was for cigar pipe tobacco; and 9.6% was for snuff users Furthermore, it was discovered that males tend to smoke more than females (Obot, 1990). These alarming revelations can also be said to be relative to youths in Gwagwalada, Area Council. Therefore, it is in a bid to provide perspectives and to reveal the psychoanalytic implications of cigarette smoking among youths in Gwagwalada Area Council that this research is conceived. There is no doubt this research study shall provide sociological inquest into the burning and rampaging issue of cigarette smoking amongst the youths of Gwagwalada Area
