The Christian Iberians viewed the Reconquest as a kind of holy crusade, the ultimate goal of which was to purge their land of infidels by any means necessary. The most aggressive of the Christian Iberian kingdoms was Castile. Perhaps the best-known figure of the Reconquest was Rodrigo Díaz, known as “El Cid,” a Castilian mercenary and subject of a famous epic poem, who became a propagandistic hero in the fight against Muslims. Another hero of the Reconquista was the apostle St. James or Santiago,…

The First Crusade, also the most successful, began with the speech of Pope Urban II at Clermont on 27 November 1095, and was initially a response to the request for armed aid against the Turks made by the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I. However, its purpose quickly shifted and it in turn became the largest mass pilgrimage of the eleventh century, though it differed from all the others in once crucial respect, in that it was, at the same time, a war, one set against what was by some referred to as the ‘savagery of the Saracens’. Though there is a certain level of difficulty in defining what a crusade was in regards to the use of the word by the medieval people , a related question that gives a substantial amount of insight into what constituted a crusade involves the motivations that the knightly elite who answered Urban II’s call to arms had for taking the cross.…

This is depicted in the First Cantar of The Poem of the Cid when the Cid said with praise “Thanks be to God on high for the great victory we have gained!” (The Poem of the Cid, 63). The Cid often called upon and praised God and saints to help and protect him when in battle; they were to be alongside the Cid when he fought. With the Cid recognizing those powerful superiors, he is showing his humility by concentrating on the powerful deities rather than focusing on himself.…

    — well, you can put that on the back burner, because once he/they saves the day everyone again forgets about all those thousands of people he killed when his laser vision wrecked a few city blocks. Luckily, the cinematographers seemed to acknowledge the extent of the protagonists’ might, panning over swathes of Smallville or tracts of urbania during fights, rerouting viewers’ attention from the monotonous dialogue. And to the effect that everyone was begging for after those gloomy trailers, “Batman v. Superman” darkened (literally) the setting of high school-esque drama developing into a tag-team beatdown of Supe’s arch rival, Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) or, rather, the Kryptonian mutant he concocted.…
