21 year old Dylann Roof opened fire one Wednesday night at historical Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Before opening fire, Roof spent an hour inside the church attending a prayer meeting with his soon to be victims. Witnesses say Roof stood up suddenly and said he was there to “shoot black people”, and that’s when he began to shoot. Other statements witnesses say Roof said were: “You’ve raped our women, and you are taking over the country… I have to do what I have to do.” Eight people died at the scene. Two were taken to get medical treatment at the Medical University in S.C, but one died on the way. Roof fled the scene, setting off an overnight manhunt. Roof had a website online, named “The Last Rhodesian”, that informed us of why he chose the historical church to target. On his website he posted photos of himself wearing a jacket with flags of apartheid-era South Africa and nearby Rhodesia, a former British colony that a white minority ruled until it became independent in 1980 and its name was changed to Zimbabwe. He also included pictures with his pistol; taking aim with the gun, and posing in front of a sign that says, “Sacred burial site. Our African ancestors” as well as outside South Carolina’s Museum and Library of Confederate History; and Roof standing on and burning an American flag. Roof had been given some money from his family for his 21st birthday but they never knew what he used it for. Investigators traced back and determined that Dylann went to a Charleston gun store that month and bought a .45 Glock caliber handgun, the same gun Roof used at his attack on the church. The gun can hold 13 rounds, and witnesses say he reloaded his gun several times when he …show more content…
After searching, police found Roof carrying strips of suboxone, a powerful narcotic commonly used to treat opiate dependence. Suboxone has very risky side effects. It’s a medication that contains buprenorphine and naloxone. Buprenorphine is a synthetic opiate and naloxone is a drug that blocks feelings of euphoria. Suboxone has been reported in the past to lead to violent outbursts and aggressive acts of rage under its influence. Roof did not have a prescription for the drug, which is commonly sold illegally on the streets. The Suboxone episode got him banned from the Columbiana Centre mall for a year, but Roof nevertheless returned, prompting another arrest, and this time, a three-year ban from the mall. This mind altering drug is the same drug Dylann Roof was under the influence of when he attacked the church. This incident goes to show how drugs can affect the developmental minds of young adults and later cause terrible

Roxane Gay, a well-known author, wrote an article for the New York Times discussing the unfortunate terrorist shooting in Charleston, South Carolina that resulted in nine deaths. To begin her article, Gay bluntly states that she does not forgive Dylann Roof—the shooter—for his ill-conceived actions. She continues into detail why she believes Roof does not deserve to be forgiven. She uses fair amounts of pathos in her statements, making references to her childhood and her Catholic faith. She also depicts uses of ethos, mentioning her knowledge and awareness of black history and black empowerment movements such as Black Lives Matter.…

The reasons why Roof committed this terrible crime is for as much wanting to belong to a family as it was about his hatred of the African-American race. These hate groups that believe in white supremacy look to the young people for recruitment because they seem to be the most easy to influence, and in most cases youth that is looking for a place where they can get acceptance, and friendship from others with the same ideology. What society wants to know is if these disenchanted youth looking for acceptance with these groups are influenced by the ideology or in the tools of the trade, like the Confederate…

The dead tell better stories then the living. For instance, if anyone had survived from inside the WTC, perhaps everyone would know that it wasn’t a controlled demolition. Perhaps then, in september of every year, the victims families wouldn’t have to endure the constant disrespect of their loved ones deaths by tin foil wearing conspiracy theorists. The shooting of john Lennon and Ronald Regan were not part of any mass shootings. And yes, I’m sure Jodie Foster wished Hinkleys motives never came out.…

Americans love guns and Americans hate guns. There is a perplexing relationship within the American people and their desire for guns. American citizens are aware of the danger that follows with gun use, but still advocate to keep them legal within the states. The gruesome massacres that have occurred within American schools such as Columbine, Virginia Tech, as well as the massacre that recently occurred in Orlando, Florida at club Pulse, somehow do not resonate with the fact that this country has a very serious gun problem. The United States must figure out logical ways to make access to guns harder such as disallowing someone who has been on a FBI watch list from ever purchasing weapons.…

Guns Don’t Kill People; Partisanship Does Every time a man with a gun goes to a crowded place and opens fire, the same exact thing happens: the media frantically tries to piece together the story, and once the violence is over, people on opposite sides of the political spectrum use it to attack each other. President Obama’s wearied response to the latest shooting at Umpqua Community College near Roseburg, Ore. is appropriate based on how familiar the situation is. But the president probably hadn’t even left the podium before right-wing media began decrying him for politicizing the tragic event. Based on my Facebook feed following the tragedy, Obama could hardly make the topic of mass shootings more politicized than it already is. Classmates from my…

The labeling theory “is the view of deviance according to which being labeled as a "deviant" leads a person to engage in deviant behavior” (“Labeling Theory Lesson,” 2003). Because Roof was labeled as a white supremacist he felt the need to conform and fit into his group so that he could be accepted and in turn feel a sense of belonging. To do this, he felt he had to commit an act of secondary deviance, the killing of nine black church members, to prove his loyalty, seriousness and devotion to the group. In addition, similar contrasts can be drawn to the murderer of James Craig Anderson, Deryl Dedmon. Dedmon grew up in the predominately white county of Rankin, south of the Mason Dixon line, infamous for its racism.…
