Catholicism has always interested me, since many of my friends growing up were Catholic. I was pleased to see this observation in the syllabus, because it gave me reason to explore this religion. I had a roommate in college that was Catholic and we had always talked about me going with her, but that unfortunately never happened. I attended June 5, Saturday Mass at the Christ is King Church in Idaho Falls. I was a little nervous to go in, because I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I had my own ideas, but I knew that those ideas were just that, and that I really was clueless.
The architecture of the church itself is why I chose to go to the Christ is King Church. We had always called it the ski jump church, because of the interesting roof that

I always figured that Mary was who they prayed to and that she was looked upon much like God or Jesus. I learned, however that Mary is highly revered as Jesus mother and that when they pray they ask that she and the Saints will pray for them too.
One of the things I thought about as I left the service was the amount of time spent in prayer, I’d say half of the time was spent in prayer. There wasn’t too much talking as far as announcements went that dealt with the congregation like I’m used to. Time was obviously important, because everything was done on time, the meeting followed the pamphlet they’d given me and the meeting ended at the appointed time.
It was fascinating to observe a different religion than my own. I learned things I didn’t know and had misunderstandings cleared up. There was a strong feeling of deep rooted tradition, and I can certainly see why this religion is appealing to some. I went into this assignment with an open mind hoping to gain a better awareness of another’s belief, and I came away with a greater appreciation and knowledge of the Catholic Church. While it didn’t make me question my own belief I did, however find that I was indeed more tolerant and open to learning of another’s

I found out when I went there, that this church has multiple locations scattered across the world; the other location is in Hong Kong, China. It was difficult to attend this church service, because of the fact that it's different from the usually church service that I'm more comfortable being around. I have been Catholic for an 8 month, but been attending a Catholic mass for 2 years. The ways I found it different then a Catholic Mass was that the church service only have communion once a month, they don't believe that Jesus is alive in the Eucharist, and they…

Because of my experience, I learned something very important: experience is a good way to learn something. Prior to actually attending the Mass, I had only heard bad things about the Tridentine Mass, e.g. it was long, boring, and in a dead language. My father’s biggest gripe was that it had too many, “smells and bells,” too many incense and bells. I was nervous when I walked into the nave of the parish. My grandmother handed me her old 1962 Roman Missal and showed me how to rudimentarily use the Missal.…

The majority of the students who had shown up where only there because their parents had forced them to go and not so much because they were aspiring to become better Catholics. It was an absolutely different environment to me, dealing with people who were so ignorant and clueless about my faith. When half the year was finally over, I noticed a difference in myself; I was happier and very relaxed. I first noticed when we had our first retreat. I was the type of person that didn’t like to participate, or even raise my hand to answer (despite knowing 100% I was right), let alone scream or sing; I was very shy and quiet.…

The first moment when I was impacted the most by, was when the priest threw holy water on the congregation. I had never experienced this in my life and was a bit confused at the reasoning behind this action. However, a very kind woman next to me explained that this was a way for them to represent baptism and the cleansing of our sins. I liked that they included this in their service because it literally forces you to consider the sacrifice Christ made for us on the cross and many churches fail to even speak of the death and resurrection of Christ each Sunday.…

After they have left everyone else is allowed to exit. One interesting thing that takes place as the individuals leave the church is that they get Holy water and make a cross on their forehead. Everything that was observed during this mass helped me to understand the Catholic individual’s way of Christianity, which will help me with the final for this course (hopefully). There are a few similarities between my Baptist Christianity Religion and Catholicism. For instance, both religions have the “same number of New Testament books” (Sjoberg).…

There were many different times throughout the service in which someone, the priest or the person who read scripture, said something and the congregation responded. Similarly, there was more than one prayer that was said out loud from memory. Another ritual in the Catholic church that does not carry over into many Protestant churches is kneeling in the pews during certain times of prayer. Likewise, the Eucharist, or communion, in Catholic Mass was another ritual I was unfamiliar with. Though I have participated in communions in Protestant churches for much of my life, I had never seen it happen the way it did in Mass.…

The Catholic Worship Service: The Mass for Dummies explains their understanding of worship as” the formal, official worship service of Catholicism, is the most important and sacred act of worship in the Catholic Church. Going to Mass is the only way a Catholic can fulfil the Third Commandment to keep holy the Sabbath day and the only regular opportunity to receive the Holy Eucharist.” The Mass incorporates the Bible (Sacred Scripture), prayer, sacrifice, hymns, symbols, gestures, sacred food for the soul, and directions on how to live a Catholic life — all in one ceremony.…

One the morning of Wednesday October 5, 2016 I attended a catholic mass in St. Brigids Parish in Amherst, Ma, just a few minutes off from the UMass Amherst Campus. This Parish stands with a lot ground, tall and massive. Is very distinctive from the building around, it’s built almost entirely of bricks for the outside and its architecture is complemented the massive windows. This ritual took place at 8:00 in the morning. The people who attended this service were few.…
