Church Experience Paper

I visited Lutheran Church in East Brunswick, NJ and observed the prayer service which was a great learning experience for me and an enjoyable one, too. Since I had attended prayer service at my middle school church as well as Oratory Prep school church, I had some understanding about Catholic service and I was able to compare and contrast the Catholic and Lutheran service. The Lutheran church did not have depictions of Saints or Mary in the Church. Otherwise, the service itself was fairly similar but some differences were noteworthy.
During the proceedings at Lutheran church, the candles on the altar were lit by an individual. During this time the music was being played. Meanwhile, the pastor was welcoming the visitors, went over announcements, and asked for names to be added to the prayer list. Then the formal liturgy started with the pastor saying "In the Name of the father, son, and

The key phrase was that we have sinned, and a plea that we be forgiven for the sake of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The pastor then reassured that we will be forgiven. A key difference between is that in Catholics, there is a private confession, but in Lutherans there is general confession in the service, and anyone who feels the need for a private confession can talk to the pastor separately. Then we stood and sang a hymn followed by Kyrie (a form of prayer) where we chanted "Lord Have Mercy" over and over. Then we sang: Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth, peace, goodwill toward men. The pastor then recited the prayer and others said “Amen. The Lord be with you” and the pastor said “and you too”. I found that there was lot more singing in Lutheran church as compared with Catholic Church. During the service, there were many accounts directly read from the bible. During this period of time I came to the realization that during a Catholic mass, bible readings are not discussed as

On Sunday, May 1st I attended a Catholic mass hosted by Reverend Gilday at Little Flower Catholic Church. The church was divided into 3 sections, north, south, and west of the altar in the center. It was a traditional mass given on the Sabbath, a required day of worship. He gave his speech through a homily during the mass reflecting upon the reading from the bible, but he also created a unique message driven from this reading. He started off the speech with a comfortable confidence and soft-spoken yet attention-grabbing speaking voice.…

Unlike Catholic service where there would be the Mass and the canonical hours, the Protestants had just the Mass and an evening service and the sermons were done during those times. The Protestant service spoke in a mix of Latin and vernacular; the Catholic service spoke solely in Latin. Next, the Protestants encouraged the congregation to participate in the singing of hymns, not just a selected choir like in the Catholic service. In the Protestants’ service, the congregation sang in chorale style, which was a monophonic rhythmic melody or “religious folk song” that followed an AAB format, with a strophic text. The Protestants used secular music and changed it to be sacred, by changing the text, for their…

As I sat down I discovered not too surprisingly everything is written in Hebrew, although the programs are in English which given you a heads-up describe of the order of service. Upon arrival in the beginning, I felt a bit uneasy and out of place, I guess it wasn’t all bad for I could take notes at my leisure, no one spoke, of course there was an occasional nod here and there, in any event no one spoke before, during, or after the service it was quite uncomfortable. However, obviously, this was not about me personally, it was about a young boy becoming a man of faith, and his proud family. This was a sacred time; this service is commonly open to the community to watch children come to an open declaration of faith.…

Grace Baptist Church kindly welcomed my attendance to the first religious service I have been to in over a decade. Each member is actively involved in the church community as well as local charities. Overall positive, the experience enlightened my comprehension of the congregation’s convictions pertaining to religious values and where they are derived from. Pleasantly greeted as well as given a compassionately farewell the members of the church treated me with the utmost respect. Nonetheless, members do not always welcome individuals nicely, such as those within the LGBTQ+ community are not readily accepted as easily.…

It is asking God once again for his love and forgiveness, and and as believers they know he will forgive their sins and cast them into the depths of the sea. The second reading was from Isaiah 11:9.…

The first moment when I was impacted the most by, was when the priest threw holy water on the congregation. I had never experienced this in my life and was a bit confused at the reasoning behind this action. However, a very kind woman next to me explained that this was a way for them to represent baptism and the cleansing of our sins. I liked that they included this in their service because it literally forces you to consider the sacrifice Christ made for us on the cross and many churches fail to even speak of the death and resurrection of Christ each Sunday.…

Also, although the St Paul’s Lutheran Church mainly celebrates the resurrection and rising of Christ, it acknowledges the ‘last supper’ and communion to be an important part of Jesus’ journey. However the way these churches worship is slightly different. The Catholic Church prays to saints and Mary through pray and the rosary, where the Lutheran Church focuses its prayers solely to God and Jesus. Also the source of music for the Our Lady of Victories, Catholic Church is from an organ and a choir, where St Paul’s Lutheran Church is prepared to have a band which plays more contemporary songs during a mass. The ethics and beliefs of the Catholic Church are made public through the Pope and his stance on current issues.…

There were many different times throughout the service in which someone, the priest or the person who read scripture, said something and the congregation responded. Similarly, there was more than one prayer that was said out loud from memory. Another ritual in the Catholic church that does not carry over into many Protestant churches is kneeling in the pews during certain times of prayer. Likewise, the Eucharist, or communion, in Catholic Mass was another ritual I was unfamiliar with. Though I have participated in communions in Protestant churches for much of my life, I had never seen it happen the way it did in Mass.…
