During the Holocaust, many people were afraid to become rescuers due to the punishment if they were discovered. Sugihara had more to worry about than being discovered. He was risking his job and financial stability by saving the Jews. According to "Chiune Sugihara: The Life Of A Great Man | The Art Of Manliness.", Sugihara said “I didn’t do anything special….I made my own decisions, that’s all. I followed my own conscience and listened to it.” Sugihara’s felt obligated and that is what pushed him to save the Jews, as shown in the quote prior. According to “Chiune Sugihara, The ‘Japanese Schindler’ ”, “Guided by the strength of his morality, Sugihara began issuing the transit visas.” Sugihara’s morality was the driving factor in his decision to save the Jews. Optimism was a source of strength and helped keep Sugihara motivated. Very similar to the circumstances that surrounded a famous school girl named Anne Frank. Anne Frank was a Jewish teenager who went into hiding and was eventually captured and killed at a concentration camp. Anne Frank and Sugihara share many good traits. Anne stayed optimistic while in hiding and even continued with her studies with the belief that she would be going back to school one day. She made learning a priority by studying, “French, English, German and Dutch, Geometry, Algebra, History, Geography, Art History, Mythology, Biology, Bible History,(and) Dutch Literature”(“Anne Frank Museum Amsterdam - the Official Anne Frank House Website”). This opportunistic look towards the future that Anne had is also present in Sugihara story. In her diary, The Diary of A Young Girl, Anne Frank said, “Think of all the beauty in yourself and in everything around you and be happy”(208). This quote demonstrates how she still kept her spirits up and looked toward the bright side of life even while in hiding. Sugihara shared this optimism with Anne Frank. He did the best he could to ensure that the Polish Jews had a chance for a bright future. Anne Frank also felt sympathy for the other Jews that weren’t in hiding.
