Chuck Van Der Woodsen: A Short Story

Superior Essays
Chuck van der Woodsen lives on the corner of 13th street. Not in a house, nor an apartment, but next to a dumpster on the sidewalk. His daily routine consisted of begging for spare change and rummaging through dumpsters for scraps. Barely making it by. Of course plenty of people walked past him everyday in the huge city of Chicago. Every once and awhile someone would generously throw a dollar or two in his tattered hat that he kept beside him. Other times they offered him something to eat. However, people usually kept their distance from him. Nobody ever stopped just to make conversation with Chuck. Afterall, who would want to talk to a dirty homeless man? Chuck’s dark brown hair was oily and unkempt as if he hadn’t known the pleasure of a shower or a comb in a while. His beard was grown in uneven patches along his jawline. His once green, now faded to a light grey, jacket covered his torn and sweat stained t-shirt underneath. He wore a pair of denim blue jeans that were shredded at the knees and rested just …show more content…
A black car was making it’s way down the highway. Something happened to where the car could not avoid hitting Chuck who was making his way through the busy road. The automobile, still going fast, came into contact with him. His life was about to change. A very forceful impact of the front bumper hit his legs and he was airborne. He rolled onto the car’s hood, smashing into the windshield. He crashed headfirst on the asphalt shattering onto the ground into an unnatural position. He was unconscious. A crowd gathered and cell phones clicked to life from those calling emergency services. Individuals started coordinating to direct traffic from the horrific scene. Strangers ran to assist Chuck. The EMTs arrived within seconds, as did the fire department, and police. The commotion and blocking of a major highway seemed to bother no one. Everyone was focused on helping

Bystander Apathy and Effect First of all, the bystander effect is something that occurs when a person is seeing a scene or crime but is not taking part in it. Many psychologists think that the rate of this effect depends of how many people are present or are seeing the scene. In fact, the term bystander effect refers to the phenomenon in which the greater the number of people present, the less likely people are to help a person in distress. So when an emergency situation occurs, observers will be more able to take part of it if there is a few or no other witnesses. Being a part of a big crowd makes it so no a single person has to take the responsibility for an action.(“Wikipedia contributors”)…

Text-to-Text relation: I don’t acquire a very solid text- to- text connection to “On the Sidewalk Bleeding”. My reasoning as to why I don’t acquire a solid connection is because the genre of books I regularly read is relatable as not very many of the books I read are from the tragedy category. The text-to-text connection that I did make was when Andy talked about marrying Laura one day, as it brought me back to the “Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins. In this novel, the foil of the “Hunger Games”, Peeta was brutally wounded by his allies, to after which he was found by Katniss, the protagonist. Katniss took Peeta into a cave and aided him as best as she could, to which Peeta confessed his love for Katniss and wished he helped Katniss earlier in their village (district).…

In New York City many people are considered selfish, greedy and close minded. New Yorkers as well as non-New Yorkers think these things are due to the fact that we are always on the move and don’t like waiting for anything. As a New Yorker I don’t see my city as what everyone portrays it to be. I see NYC as a very caring and open minded city with a large variety of many different people. During the accident, I was sure that nothing would go wrong because at my sight, I thought we were going slow, but when it crashed, it sounded pretty loud.
