New York, the fourth most populated state in the United States of America, is hopping with excitement for the political race for US Senate in the 9th district; due to the candidates evoking thoughts on education. First, the Democratic nominee, the incumbent for the last 18 years, Chuck Schumer. Chuck was born in Brooklyn, New York and has grown up in the city area his whole life and still lives there today. He graduated from Harvard Law school in 1974, and then right on, in 1980, he was elected in the 9th district for US Senate of the state of New York at age 29. The Republican nominee, Wendy Long, is 56 years old and grew up from Worcester, Massachusetts She graduated from Dartmouth College and then studied at Northwestern University School

He has proposed ideas such as reducing college textbook prices and producing more Americorps (ontheissues.org/Charles_Schumer). He believes that cutting the cost of textbooks will help the families who struggle to pay for college already. He also urges that we need more Americorps funding, if they are cut, then New York will be worse off because children will not be acquiring the tutors that they need. On his website he also discusses what he is fighting for when it comes to education. He wants children to get the best possible education and it should be affordable for the struggling middle class families. One of his proudest achievements that he has done for families is the American Opportunity Tax Credit that he credit which provides $2,500 tax credit per year for college students and their families (chuckschumer.gov). Finally, Chuck Schumer shows great interest in not necessarily setting new standards for schools but investing in them and providing the resources that schools need in order to be successful (votesmart.org). He says that when looking at how the NCLB failed when setting new standards his solution would be providing the proper tools for the children to achieve necessary academic goals.
