Chuck Palahniuk is an American novelist who was born in 1962. He spent his childhood living out of a mobile home in Burbank, Washington. As his parents were separated when he was only fourteen, he grew up with his siblings in their maternal grandparents' cattle ranch. In 1980, he graduated from Columbia High School in Burbank, winning the award for "Most Wittiest" in the process. Some regard this award as the catalyst for his nascent interest in writing. In 1986, he graduated from the University of Oregon then got a BA in Journalism and started working as a journalist for a local paper. In the 90s, he began to write fiction at Tom Spanbauer's workshops. Palahniuk occupied many positions after being an author such as diesel mechanic, dish washer, movie projectionist, volunteer at homeless shelters and an escort for patients. All this has contributed in shaping most of his stories, both fictional and non-fictional. Some claim that Palahniuk is a nihilist; others label his stories as "transgressive fiction" (Mookerjee 9). According to The Cult, he wanted to punish all the people who didn't publish his “good work” that's why he wrote Fight Club in 1996. He was surprised when the novel became his first published work. After that Palahniuk wrote many novels like Survivor (1999), Choke (2001), Lullaby (2002), Diary (2003), Haunted (2005), Rant (2007), Snuff (2008), Damned (2011) and Invisible Monsters was published again in 1999. He got many prizes: the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Award and the Oregon Book Award for Best Novel for his novel Fight Club in 1997.
