The Glade is surrounded by a maze, in which they have to solve to escape. When Thomas arrived confused and scared, Chuck was the first person to reach out to him and explain what he was experiencing. Chuck took the opportunity to make a friend and help show him around. In the book Chuck says, “Nice to meet you, Thomas, don’t you worry, I’ll take care of you. I’ve been here a whole month and I know the place inside and out. You can count on Chuck, okay?” (Dashner 5). As they became closer, Chuck became one of Thomas’s symbol of hope. In the book it states, “In the Glade, Chuck had become a symbol for him—a beacon that somehow they could make everything right again in the world. Sleep in beds. Get kissed goodnight. They had escaped the maze, and all that was left was to find his parents wherever they were. Out of nowhere a knife was thrown at Thomas, when Chuck saw it, he bravely and heroically stepped in front of the knife and saved Thomas’s life. This was a drastic change in the plot. Thomas was heartbroken by Chuck’s sacrifice, in the book he says “I promised him!" he screamed, realizing even as he did so that his voice was laced with something wrong. Almost insanity. "I promised I'd save him, take him home! I promised him!”(Dashner 358). This was the turning point for Thomas and motivated him to stay alive in honor of Chuck. If Chuck wouldn’t have stepped in front of that knife for Thomas, the story would have ended there. There wouldn’t be two more
