The cultural event that I visited was the Chrysler Museum of Art located in Norfolk, Virginia on July 31, 2016. Before the museum was named the Chrysler Museum of Art it was the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences. Walter Chrysler, Jr. came to Norfolk, Virginia in 1971, bringing with him, collections of art in the thousands. Walter Chrysler, Jr. contributions to the museum are among many other artists that have contributed to the museum as well. This was not known when I entered the museum. While wandering around the museum, I took the time to notice that the museum is enormous. Upon asking some specific questions of the museum employees and gathering information, I was able to find out that the museum is 210,000 square feet and that there are two two-story wings that flank the museum's front entrance. The museum has gift/museum shops, two gardens, and Wi-Fi. The galleries on the first floor have Egyptian, Asian, Meso-American, African, and Greco-Roman works. The architects of the museum were Ferguson Peebles and the museum has been updated, renovated several times since it opened in 1933. The museum was renovated in the 30s, and the 60s, and ten years later there were more renovations and again in the 80s. In the 80s 40,000 square feet of the museum was …show more content…

What is the purpose of a museum or a historic site? On the surface, many would indicate that it is education. Through his monograph, Upon the Ruins of Slavery: Slavery, the President’s House at Independence National Historical Park, and Public Memory, Roger C. Aden argues that the purpose of a museum is much more complex than that, and it varies from person to person. He examined the various processes and problems that occur in the creation of a historical site. Specifically, Aden examines Independence National Historical Park.…

A visit to a museum is not just about the historical and educational gainings and stimulations, but also about entertainment, luxury and comfort. In an era where people cannot be separated from their smartphones, it is rare to be attracted by something older and traditional. The image plays a dominant role in attracting the public. For most individuals, it is preferable to examine the past while being inside of an exceptional modern environment rather than an old, former home. Thus, it is not about brand, it is about the whole experience, that unfortunately today must be accompanied by all those modern elements that rule people's daily lives and have become a plasmatic necessity.…

I visited Mitchell Museum of the American Indian located at 3001 Central Street, Evanston, Illinois. Glancing through the outside of the museum, my impression was this is a pretty small building. I had a single story about the building; I thought I might have chosen the wrong museum to go to since it is small in size. However, as soon as I walked through the main door, I had a good feeling in a cozy building with full of American Indian artifacts, pottery, and native fashion. I was filled with more knowledge through the major regions of United States and Canada such as Woodland, Plains, Southwest, Northwest, and Arctic.…

My visit to the Nelson-Atkins museum was unlike any of my other visits to museums. First of all, I had a solid purpose for going and found myself paying much more attention to the intricacies of pieces I was viewing. Secondly, due to its sheer size, this museum had a wide variety of art from many different cultures and time periods, giving each hallway and room a different feel. Lastly, I felt much more educated about what I was viewing, when compared to previous experiences. I waited until the 8th of July to drive to Kansas City and thus had read most of content that would be covered over the semester.…

Employing the examples of the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum, the African American Museum of Philadelphia, and in the end the National Museum of African American History and Culture as well as other museums, such as Chicago’s DuSable Museum and the International Afro-American Museum highlight changes that happened in museums beginning in the 60’s and beyond. From Storefront to Monument by Andrea A. Burns looks closely at these museums created in storefronts, in predominantly black neighborhoods, as well as the people involved and discusses the triumphs and hardships black museums went through from their creation, especially in regards to their attempts to compete with other, better funded, institutions. Primarily, Burns focuses on the fact that black community leaders and “the African American museums that emerged during the 1960s and 1970s challenged and re-created new national memories and identities that incorporated the ideas, events, and objects, and places tied to black history” (Burns 4). Museums in the past were places…

The Dallas Museum of Art was the complete opposite of what I imagined it to be like. Before attending the museum, I had very low expectations. When I thought of “art museum” I imagined dusty walls lined with undiverse and outdated art. I imagined a place old couples went to because they had nothing better to do with their time. A place where the past lingered and grew old as civilization quickly moved on and forgot about it.…
