Option 2 The first striking thing from the Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is the use of weather to create moods that affect my feelings towards the murder of Santiago Nasar and create a sense of uncertainty or clarity. The most eminent passage of the weather describes both a poor and a placid atmosphere:
Most people coincided in recalling in through the banana groves, as was to be expected in a fine February of that period. But most agreed that the weather was funereal, with a cloudy, low sky and the thick smell of still waters (4).
Some people remember the weather on the unfortunate day of the murder as “funereal” (4) and some remember the day as “fine” (4). The divided accounts on the day of the murder develop various atmospheres that makes me feel differently. When the weather is described as cloudy, it creates an ominous mood; whereas, when the weather is described as clear, it creates a pitiful mood because of an unfortunate event happening on a beautiful day. What the characters do in the novel makes me question their morality and also makes me want to discover the truths of Santiago Nasar’s death. My most unexplained question is who did Angela Vicario give her virginity to? The answer to this question answer more questions that I have including what makes Angela Vicario so adamant to say that Santiago Nasar is the perpetrator, and why she decided to choose someone else as the scapegoat to her mistake. Knowing that Santiago Nasar is the scapegoat, it makes me pity him. He died not knowing the truths to his death and also a dishonorable death which urge me to find the truth to mend his honor as a personal goal that was made through my
