Question: Honor is a prominent theme in the novel. In what ways is this theme underscored in its characters? Vartan Gregorian once said “Dignity is not negotiable. Dignity is the honor of the family.” Gregorian reveals the importance of honor toward the family, to the extent that it is not negotiable. It represents one's dignity. Similarly, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel “The Chronicle of a Death Foretold” reveals the importance of upholding honor in the Colombian society, especially in the family. He is able to underscore the theme through the uses of many of the characters in the novel. Honor is first introduced when Bayardo San Roman returns Angela Vicario because she lost her virginity before they got married. He had to return her in order to protect his honor. Angela Vicario, on the other hand, illustrates the shame of losing honor toward the family and her mother Purisima exposes how valuable honor is for the family by releasing her anger on Angela through forceful beatings. Furthermore, her losing her virginity causes the Vicario brothers to take revenge on whoever did it to her(Santiago Nasar). Their revenge isn’t optional in their society, it is deemed necessary to have revenge in order to regain honor in the family. Finally, the community underscores the theme of honor by accepting the Vicario brothers excuse for their action. Prudencia Cotes ,Pablo Vicario’s fiance, states how it was necessary for him to kill Santiago to regain honor, otherwise she would never marry him. The jury that listened to the Vicario brothers and appealed to their crime because they said it was for the sake of honor.
