The role of religion and irony in Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez plays an important part in the death of Santiago Nasar.. Every little detail, From the Bishop coming to town and Angela losing her virginity played a huge major role in his death. Religious settings, virginity is elevated to a virtue, and therefore it is worth everything to defend. The society in which the people live in, the importance of religion, is connected to the idea of maintaining honor. There is certain religious ideology that must be respected, and in this case it’s the idea of virginity. It is believe that a woman's virginity should be kept until they are married. This may be seen as a sign of betrayal. In the Bible, Jesus Christ predicted that before the rooster crowed in the morning, his disciple Peter would deny him three times. In fact, Peter did deny knowing Jesus Christ three times that morning. In a similar way, all the townspeople betray Santiago by failing to warn him of the plot against his life. Another possible reason for the roosters crowing is simply as a warning for the town in the hour before the murder. It is ironic to say similarly to that of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, Santiago was crucified or sacrificed for a crime that he never convicted.
The Irony according to the religious idea that centered this town, is the priest coming to town, is supposed to bring peace and joy, but instead it brought sadness and death.. One can say that the bishop destroys all their hope of happiness; he didn't show much interest therefore by fate the town becomes evil with one murder. Santiago was murdered for someone else’s wrongdoing. In other words, he was a sacrifice for the town’s
