The treatment of minorities is a theme that Gabriel García Márquez touches on in his book, Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Arabs were ostracized in Colombian villages during the 1950’s like the community outlined present in Chronicle of a Death Foretold. According to the article “Colombia Awakens to the Arab world”, “Currently in Colombia, we have approximately 700,000 people of Lebanese origin, who are descendants of the 30,000 immigrants who came from Lebanon to settle in Colombia in the late 19th century.” (Achmawi) Many in Colombia can trace their ancestry back to the people who were ostracized during the first migrations. Islam in Colombia spread through these immigrants who migrated from their home countries to escape harsh conditions
